  1. Examiner

about the publication refimprove date July 2009 The Examiner was a weekly paper founded by James Henry Leigh Hunt Leigh and John Hunt publisher John Hunt in 1808. For the first fifty years it was a leading intellectual journal expounding radical principles, but from 1865 it repeatedly changed hands and political allegiance, resulting in a rapid decline in readership and loss of purpose. Early history While the Examiner was in the hands of John and Leigh Hunt, the sub title was A Sunday paper, on politics, domestic economy, and theatricals , and the newspaper devoted itself to providing independent reports on each of these areas. It consistently published leading writers of the day, including Lord Byron , Percy Bysshe Shelley , John Keats and William Hazlitt . The Hunt brothers failed in their initial aspiration to refuse advertisements in order to increase impartiality. In the first edition, the editor claimed The Examiner would pursue truth for its sole object and the paper s radical reformist principles resulted in a series of high profile prosecutions of the editors. A tradition of publishing accurate news and witty criticisms of domestic and foreign politics was continued by Albany Fonblanque who took over the paper in 1828. Until Fonblanque sold The Examiner in the mid 1860s, the newspaper took the form of a sixteen page journal priced at 6d, designed to be kept and repeatedly referred to. 1. Punch Line San Francisco

Advert date December 2007 The Punch Line is San Francisco s longest running comedy club. The original Punch Line Comedy Club opened on the site of the Old Waldorf, a rock venue managed by Bill Graham Presents , who had been promoting rock shows there since the mid seventies. When Bill Graham opened Wolfgang s in 1983 at 915 Columbus Ave., the current home of Cobb s Comedy Club , the majority of the space used by the Old Waldorf was split off and the remainder was renamed the Punch Line and dedicated to presenting live comedy. It was so successful that in August 1986 a second Punch Line was opened in Walnut Creek but closed in 1995. The third Punch Line opened on New Year s Eve 1991 and is still presenting shows 7 days a week in Sacramento , California. All three clubs were owned and operated by Bill Graham Presents up until the death of Bill Graham in 1991. The company was taken over by a group of employees who later sold it to SFX Promotions. It was then sold to Clear Channel Entertainment . Eventually, Bill Graham Presents along with other independent promoters formed Live Nation , which is now the largest concert production & promotion company in the world. Comics such as Robin Williams , Ellen DeGeneres , Rosie O Donnell , Drew Carey , Chris Rock and Dana Carvey took their first comedic steps on the Punch Line stage. The Punch Line s dedication to comic tradition has earned it the San Francisco Examiner and the San Francisco Chronicle s readers choice award for the best comedy club. Today, the Punch Line is the only full time comedy club in San Francisco, hosting comics Dave Chappelle , Margaret Cho , Bobby Slayton , Wanda Sykes , Greg Giraldo , Jim Gaffigan , Sarah Silverman , Zach Galifianakis , Dave Attell , George Lopez , David Cross , and Greg Proops , among others.
