The Church of SantaMariadei Domenicani in Soave is a small building of the XV century , located inside the Scaliger walls near Piazza dell Antenna. File SantaMariadei Domenicani.jpg thumb The facade of SantaMariadei Domenicani History The church and the nearby convent were built thanks to the Dominican order Dominican friars in 1443. During the XVII century the convent lived a very difficult period because of the suppression of mendicant orders . So, in 1659 the inhabitants of Soave requested and obtained permission to Venice to take possession of the convent and all the adjoining rooms, pledging also to celebrate every year one hundred and two masses. In 1871 the convent was sold by the City and later was destroyed. The church became in the meantime public oratory, whose maintenance was taken from the Parish of Soave, who held the catechism and Masses for young people. Unfortunately over time nobody decided to restore the ancient building only in 1985 the Banca Popolare of Verona financed the repairs which was then approved by the City of Soave. Thanks to this restoration the inhabitants are now able to regain possession of this historical monument, although performing a different function from the original one. Architectural profile The fourteenth century building has simple forms and a schematic plant. Nevertheless the church is very beautiful and elegant. The lines are quiet and severe. The monument represents the moment of transition between two styles the Gothic architecture Gothic and the Renaissance . The shades of different colors, green, ocher and white, alternate and create a particular architectural harmony. The interior of the church, with one nave , is illuminated with tall gothic windows. In the background is the altar , made in marble, flanked by two little baroque doors. Three other altars are placed in the chapels located on the left wall of the church ... Orphan date February 2009 Francesco DegliAngeli or Angelis Sorrento , 1567 &ndash Colela , Ethiopia, 21 October 1628 was an Italian Jesuit missionary to Ethiopia. Life He entered the Society of Jesus in 1583. After two years 1602 04 spent in the mission of the Indies, he travelled to Ethiopia, where they called him the man who was always cheerful . Angeli stood high in the favour of two successive Kings of Ethiopia. He made converts, among them the brother of the King and lords of the court, but did not succeed bringing about the reunion of the Abyssinian Church with the Roman Catholic Church , because of opposition from Ethiopian monks. For five years Angeli preached the Gospel among the Agazi , where he founded a church and school. Works He translated many religious works into the language of the Agazi. The most important of them was the commentary of Maldonatus on the Gospels of St. Matthew and St. Luke.
