File Map saxony1900.png thumb 270px Kingdom of Saxony, about 1900 Upper Saxony Obersachsen was a name given to the majority of the German lands held by the House of Wettin , in what is now called Mitteldeutschland Halle Leipzig Mitteldeutschland . The name derives from when, after the fall of Duke Henry the Lion in 1180, the medieval Duchy of Saxony dissolved and the Saxe Wittenberg lands passed to the House of Ascania and later to the Wettins in the Margraviate of Meissen . These dynasties subdued areas east of the Saale river inhabited by Polabian Slavs , and took the tribal name Sachsen Saxons upstream the Elbe with them. It was particularly to distinguish the newly conquered lands from Lower Saxony , a concept which arose later in popular usage though never enforced as a term for the original Saxon lands in north and west Germany where West Low German dialects had spread , in what is now the States of Germany state of Lower Saxony , as well as the adjacent Westphalia n region, Holstein and the western part of todays Saxony Anhalt north of the Harz range Eastphalia . The Wettin lands up the Elbe formed an Electorate of Saxony electorate , which later headed the Upper Saxon Circle , acquired the Upper Lusatia n region and finally was raised to a Kingdom of Saxony Kingdom . Thus the mid German inhabitants of the German state of Saxony today are known as Saxons. This is true of the media, though the East Central German dialects of Upper Saxon German Upper Saxon Mei enisch and Osterl ndisch are placed in the Thuringian dialect Thuringian Upper Saxon continuum. Conrad of Saxony , also called Conradus Saxo, Conrad of Brunswick or Conradus Holyinger , was a Friar Minor and ascetical writer. Biography Date and place of birth uncertain. Holyinger is perhaps his family name. The error has been made by some of confounding Conrad of Saxony with another person of the same name who suffered for the Faith in 1284, whereas it is certain that they were two distinct individuals, though belonging to the same province of the order in Germany. Conrad became provincial minister of the province of Saxony in 1245, and for sixteen years ruled the province with much zeal and prudence. While on his way to the general chapter of 1279, he was attacked with a grievous illness and died at Bologna in 1279. Works The writings of Conrad of Saxony include several sermons and the Speculum Beat Mari Virginis the latter, at times Pseudo Bonaventura erroneously attributed to St. Bonaventure , was edited by the Friars Minor at Quaracchi in 1904. The preface to this excellent edition of the Speculum contains a brief sketch of the life of Conrad of Saxony and a critical estimate of his other writings.
