The 29th Street Saxophone Quartet was an American saxophonesaxophone quartet . Established in 1982, the ensembles members are alto saxophone alto saxophonists Bobby Watson and Ed Jackson, tenor saxophone tenor saxophonist Rich Rothenberg in recent years, Willie Williams , and baritone saxophone baritone saxophonist Jim Hartog. The group has performed an eclectic repertoire, from hard bop to jazz classic jazz to show tune s, to funk , to rap , and original experimental works. In an early review of the band s first extended engagement in New York City in 1984, John S. Wilson music critic John S. Wilson of The New York Times wrote blockquote 29th Street Saxophone Quartet is a band of contrasts. The ensemble playing is clean, precise and tightly together, but the solos are filled with slashing, exuberant abandon. At times it is the very essence of loose, free jazz but it also uses the heavy, stylized sound of Stan Kenton s saxophone writing. The four musicians are choreographed in shifting formations to spotlight soloists and in dance movements that extend the musical movements. ref cite web url http www.nytimes.com 1984 11 02 arts music saxes go it alone.html title MUSIC SAXES GO IT ALONE work The New York Times author John S. Refimprove date November 2006 Saxophone tone holes are tone hole s that exist in the body and bell of a saxophone . They are strategically placed in order to achieve a variety of note s while holding the best possible Intonation music intonation . Varieties There are two varieties of tone holes, straight and rolled. Straight tone holes are much more prevalent, but rolled tone holes are favored by some saxophonists as they supposedly produce a different timbre of sound. An American company based in Elkhart, Indiana named Martin manufactured saxophones with straight toneholes that were tapered, i.e. the circumference of the tone hole chimneys was smaller at the point of contact with the leather pads than where they were soldered to the main body of the instrument. The Concerto in E flat major for alto saxophone and string orchestra was written by Alexander Glazunov in 1934. The piece lasts about fourteen minutes and is played without pause. It is deeply rooted in Romanticism , and has entered the standard saxophone repertoire. History Although invented in the early 1840s, the saxophone was still fairly new and unfamiliar in Glazunov s day it remained untouched for a long time as it was considered middle class . However, Glazunov was enthralled by the sound of the saxophone a new timbre in the musical world. ref name letters The work premiered in Nyk ping , Sweden , on 25 November 1934, with Sigurd Rasch r , a famous German saxophonist, as soloist. It is Rasch r who is credited for bringing about the concerto s composition. He hounded Glazunov for a saxophone concerto, so much so that the composer wrote to a colleague that he had started the piece in March under the influences of attacks rather than requests from the Danish sic saxophonist named Sigurd Rascher . He completed the work in June 1934. Glazunov almost certainly never heard his Saxophone Concerto publicly performed, as the first Paris performance of the work did not occur until after his death. He made no mention in his letters of any Classical music written in collaboration collaboration with another composer on the concerto. However, in 1936, the publishing company made an addition to the piano reduction they added A. Petiot as a second composer. ref name letters Structure This is the structural breakdown according to Glazunov himself, taken from a letter he wrote to Maximilian Steinberg Exposition Allegro Moderato, in 4 4, ending in G minor Development brief Transition Andante C flat major sometimes B major , in 3 4, leading into a small cadenza Conclusion Fugato C minor ... www.dornpub.com SaxjPDF glazounov.pdf Letters From Glazunov The Saxophone Years ref Recordings Some ...
