Scaffolding is a technique supported by some model view controller software framework framework s, in which the programmer may write a specification that describes how the application database may be used. The compiler uses this specification to generate code that the application can use to create, read, update and delete database entries, effectively treating the template as a Scaffolding scaffold on which to build a more powerful application. Scaffolding is an evolution of database code generators from earlier development environments, such as Oracle s CASE Generator, and many other Fourth generation programming language 4GL client server software development products. Scaffolding was popularized by the Ruby on Rails framework. It has been adapted to other software frameworks, including Django web framework Django , Monorail .Net , Symfony , CodeIgniter , Yii , CakePHP , Model Glue , Grails Framework Grails , Catalyst software Catalyst , JBoss Seam Seam Framework , Spring Roo , ASP.NET Dynamic Data and ASP.NET MVC Framework ASP.NET MVC Framework s Metadata Template Helpers. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Putlog holes , as the name implies, are small holes that were intended to receive the ends of logs or squared wooden beams in the walls of buildings, especially in the Middle Ages . Sometimes these logs were used for temporary scaffolding in construction, and sometimes they seem to have been used to ease the construction of Hoarding castles hoardings . Evidence for the former can sometimes be seen from the spiral pattern they have left on the surface of round towers. The inconsequential size and the spacing of the holes meant that they did not affect the solidity of the walls. Hoardings were useful, as they gave archers greater mobility and a wider field of fire in times of siege they also through machicolations holes in the floor facilitated dropping boulders etc directly onto the enemy s heads, without the need to expose oneself to danger. A fill trestle is a bridge that is built to provide a scaffolding for the construction of a fill or an dam earthen dam . Typically, the trestle is built across the valley and a railroad track is laid across the trestle . Specially designed side dumping railroad car s filled with earth or gravel are pushed onto it and dumped, burying the trestle. Typically, a fill trestle is constructed out of wood which remains buried in the fill and eventually decomposition decomposes . Advances in construction technology, particularly the development of the dump truck , have rendered the fill trestle technique obsolete. Some Notes on Rhythm in Verse by Donald Davie first appeared in Agenda Poetry , in the Autumn Winter issue 1972&ndash 73, and was later collected in his book of essays and interviews, Trying To Explain . It is a short piece comprising seven numbered paragraphs. He makes a case for scansion being a sort of crutch or scaffolding in the act of composition . The first paragraph states that the boundary between free verse and metred verse is smudged . He writes If you shorten an iambic pentameter iambic measure to the iambic trimeter trimeter , and then allow yourself all the liberties that traditional prosody allows you, you have a measure which few readers will scan, even subconsciously.
