The mountain is part of the Sandwich Range of the White Mountains New Hampshire White Mountains . It is officially trailless and several different routes are possible. The West Peak of the ridge is the true summit, however the East Peak has the official register. The Middle and East Peaks are on the New Hampshire Hundred Highest list. Scar Ridge is flanked to the west by Loon Mountain , to the northwest by Black Mountain, and to the east by Mount Osceola . Scar Ridge stands within the drainage basin watershed of the Pemigewasset River , which drains into the Merrimack River , and into the Gulf of Maine at Newburyport, Massachusetts . The northeast side of Scar Ridge drains into the Hancock Branch, a tributary of the East Branch Pemigewasset River East Branch of the Pemigewasset River. The southwest side of Scar Ridge drains into Telford Brook, Mack Brook, and Little East Pond Brook, all of which drain into Eastman Brook, and thence into the Pemigewasset. It stands above Rydal Water . Topography Nab Scar is properly the steep terminal face of the southern ridge of Heron Pike , but the name is also given to the whole of the ridge south of Lord Crag. Alfred Wainwright gave it the status of a separate fell in his Pictorial Guide to the Lakeland Fells and that convention is followed here. The popular Fairfield horseshoe ridge walk either begins or ends with Nab Scar, consensus never having been achieved on the correct direction of travel. This route also takes in the additional Wainwrights of Heron Pike, Great Rigg , Fairfield Lake District Fairfield , Hart Crag , Dove Crag , High Pike Scandale High Pike and Low Pike in a circuit of Rydale. From the double summit of Heron Pike, a grassy ridge descends south westerly, gradually narrowing until a rougher section falls more steeply at Lord Crag. Beyond here it levels out, curving back a little to the east and passing over a couple of low mounds. The second of these is taken as the summit of Nab Scar.
