Refimprove date December 2009 The Garvellachs Scottish Gaelic Garbh Eileaich or Isles of the Sea form a small archipelago in the Inner Hebrides of Scotland . Part of the Argyll and Bute council area , they lie west of Lunga, Firth of Lorn Lunga and northwest of Scarba and have been uninhabited since World War II . The islands include Garbh Eileach , D n Channuill and Eileach an Naoimh . The waters surrounding the islands are extensively used for leisure sailing. A good knowledge of the area is required, with weather conditions likely to change very quickly. Due to the array of separate tidal races produced by the underwater Topographical topography there are some treacherous stretches of water. These include the Grey Dogs and the Gulf of Corryvreckan , between Scarba and Jura, Scotland Jura in which is located the infamous Corryvreckan whirlpool, which is the third largest whirlpool in the world. Brief history After 1778, when most of the peninsula was in the ownership of the Campbells of Craignish, who had been the dominant local clan since the earliest recorded times around 1100, parcels of land were gradually sold off, and by 1850 most of the land was part of two estates Lunga, purchased by the MacDougalls of Lunga island , to the north and the Craignish estate to the south end of the peninsula. It is possible for tourists to visit the site by way of boats trips from local harbours. Topography Image Jura and Scarba.jpg thumb 250px left Gulf of Corryvreckan from the air Strong Atlantic Ocean Atlantic ocean current currents and unusual underwater topography conspire to produce a particularly intense tidal race in the Corryvreckan channel. As the flood tide enters the narrow area between the two islands it speeds up to 8.5 knot unit knots 16  km h, 10  mph , and also meets a variety of seabed features including a deep hole and a rising pinnacle. These features combine to create whirlpool s, standing wave s and a variety of other surface effects. The Corryvreckan is the third largest whirlpool in the world, and is on the northern side of the gulf, surrounding a pyramid shaped basalt pinnacle that rises from depths of 70  m to 29  m at its rounded top. Flood tides and inflow from the Firth of Lorne to the west can drive the waters of Corryvreckan to waves of over 30 feet 9  m , and the roar of the resulting maelstrom can be heard ten miles 16  km away. Although not, as is sometimes believed, formally classified by the Admiralty as unnavigable ref The West Coast pilot stated Passage conditions 7.260 It is reported that the excessive rate of the tidal stream and the narrow width of the E entrance channel create an unnavigable area just S of Eilean a Bhealaich, an islet in the centre of the E entrance.
