Scud clouds, a type of fractus cloud , are low, detached, irregular cloud s found beneath nimbostratus or cumulonimbus cloud s. These clouds are often ragged or wispy in appearance. When caught in the Outflow meteorology outflow Vertical draft downdraft beneath a thunderstorm , scud clouds will often move faster than the storm clouds themselves. When in an inflow Vertical draft updraft area, scud clouds tend to rise and may exhibit lateral movement ranging from very little to substantial. Scud clouds are formed as the warmer and often more moist updraft of a thunderstorm lifts the relatively warm air near the surface. These clouds condense as the warm, moist air saturates through ascent and is pushed outward from the storm. Scud clouds are very commonly found on the leading edge of a storm front. In this area of a storm, scud are commonly associated with arcus cloud shelf cloud s. Scud clouds may also form when an updraft ingests Precipitation meteorology precipitation cooled air from the downdraft. Scud forming in this region of the storm, if moving laterally, will tend to move inward towards the dominant updraft. Rising scud may condense and organize into a wall cloud . Scud clouds can often be mistaken for a developing tornado, landspout, or waterspout. The difference is determinable by identifying if there s any rotation not just movement of the scud clouds. If any rotation occurs, a tornado, landspout, or waterspout has a high chance of forming. Forecast Viewing scud clouds means that there is a cumulonimbus parent cloud. Rain , hail , strong wind , and lightning can be expected from the parent cloud. In general aviation , scud running is a practice in which aviator pilots lower their altitude to avoid clouds or Instrument meteorological conditions IMC . The goal of scud running is to stay clear of weather to continue flying with visual, rather than instrument, references. This practice is widely accepted to be dangerous, and has led to death in many cases from pilots flying into radio towers and high tension wires however, even instrument rated pilots sometimes elect to take the risk to avoid icing or embedded thunderstorms in cloud, or in situations where the minimum instrument altitudes are too high for their aircraft. He says that he chose the name Scud to match his Chinese name, which translates in English as Scudding Clouds . He was born in mainland China on March 20th, 1967, during the country s Great Cultural Revolution. His films explore themes usually deemed too controversial for Hong Kong cinema, including same sex relationships and drug taking, and include many nude scenes of Chinese young men, whose pubic hair and private parts are fully exposed on camera. His film making style eschews cynicism or gritty realism, and embraces an acceptance of the life choices made by his characters, rather than a search for solutions . Life and career Scud was raised by his grandmother before he moved to Hong Kong at the age of 13.
