The SeaIce Physics and Ecosystem eXperiment SIPEX was an Australian contribution to the International Polar Year IPY . The expedition studied the seaice in the Antarctica zone in September and October 2007, investigating links between the seaice and the Southern Ocean ecosystems. Taking part were 45 scientists from 8 different countries, each a specialist on some aspect of the Antarctic seaice zone. Travelling aboard the research vessel Aurora Australis , the researchers covered East Antarctica between 110 E and 130 E. Experiments dealt with ice thickness and snow cover, the sympagic fauna and flora and examined the effects of ocean currents and wind. The extent and distribution of seaice in the polar regions is a sensitive indicator of global climate change. Global warming has been implicated in significant reductions in the extent of seaice and this trend is set to continue. Introduction The film followed the extended family of The General , played by Barker, as they went on an eventful seaside holiday. It was set on the Dorset coast in Tiddly Cove , actually the coast between Bournemouth and Swanage . Ronnie Barker was a keen collector of saucy seaside postcard s, and published several books of them. The humour of By the Sea was very much based on the colourful style of these. The film is notable for being completely free of speech, with the score by Ronnie Hazlehurst and various sound effects in their place. The humour is instead entirely visual, and relies on comic stereotypes the old randy general, the busty girl, the cheeky schoolboy, etc. . It was the follow up to another Two Ronnies film, The Picnic , featuring the same characters. Before it was shown, the BBC commissioned producer Alan J.W. Bell, the director of Last of the Summer Wine , to improve the film. No scenes were re shot, but he re structured the film and commissioned Ronnie Hazlehurst to write an original music score. To add comic effect, the film was also slightly speeded up. The 55 minute film was shown on BBC 1 at Easter 1982, but has ... currently hold the rights to the Two Ronnies library. Plot summary The Sea, the Sea is a tale of the strange obsessions that haunt a self satisfied playwright and theatre director director as he begins to write his memoirs . Played out against a vividly rendered landscape and filled with allusions to mythology myth and magic paranormal magic , Murdoch s novel exposes the jumble of motivations that drive her characters the human vanity, jealousy, and lack of compassion behind the disguises they present to the world. Charles Arrowby, its central figure, decides to withdraw from the world and dwell in seclusion in a house by the sea. Whilst there, by an extraordinary coincidence he encounters his first love, Mary Hartley Fitch, whom he has not seen since his love affair with her as an adolescent. Although she is almost unrecognisable in old age, and totally outside his theatrical world, he becomes obsessed by her, idealizing his former relationship with her and attempting to persuade her to elope with him. Iceice is caused when changes in salinity , Sea surface temperature ocean temperature , and light intensity cause stress to seaweeds, making them produce a moist organic substance that attracts bacteria in the water and induces the characteristic whitening and hardening of the seaweed s tissues. ref name dost http sntpost.stii.dost.gov.ph frames jantomar04 pg27b.htm DOST.gov.ph ref Bacteria involved include those in the Vibrio Aeromonas and Cytophaga Flavobacteria complexes. ref name hurtado Hurtado, A. The S stands for Schnellfahrtzug , which is German for high speed train . It replaced the InterCityExperimental InterCityExperimental ICE V . History The train was originally used to test components during the development of the ICE 3 ICE  3 in the mid 1990s. The powerheads were taken from the ongoing production of the ICE 2 ICE  2 with only minor modifications. Two of the three original carriages had 500  kW traction motor s on each axle, resulting in an impressive overall power output of 13,600  kW. When testing was completed, both these powered carriages were retired. After the ICE V was retired, the ICE S became the testing train for the maintenance of the high speed lines. Three times a year, the train runs on each line with an array of sensors and cameras to determine the line s condition. During the acceptance test s of new high speed lines, the ICE S is usually the first train to drive the line at design speed and beyond.
