    John Rogers 1723 &ndash September 23, 1789 was an United States American lawyer from Upper Marlboro, Maryland . He was a delegate for Maryland to the Continental Congress in 1775 and 1776. Rogers was a member of the Committee of Safety American Revolution committee of safety in 1774 and 1775, and a member of the Maryland provincial conventions in 1774, 1775, and 1776, in addition to being a member of the Continental Congress. He was the second major of battalion for Prince Georges County . In 1776 he was a judge of the court of admiralty law admiralty . He was one of three Maryland delegates to the Congress who voted in July 1776, to declare America s independence from Great Britain and to approve the Declaration of Independence. Because of his subsequent illness, Rogers signature does not appear on the actual Declaration. He was a delegate to the Continental Congress for Rhode Island in 1789. Many sources spell his last name as Gardiner . John s parents were Colonel John Gardner 1696&ndash 1770 and his second wife, Mary Taylor Gardner. He was born in South Kingstown in 1747. During the early days of the American Revolutionary War Revolutionary War he served with a militia company known as the Kingstown Reds , and was commissioned as a Captain in November 1775. Gardner served several times as a judge, or justice of the peace. His first such appointment came in 1776, and his last in 1791. In 1786 and 1787 he served in the Rhode Island general assembly. The assembly sent him as a delegate to the Continental Congress in 1789. John died in South Kingstown on October 18, 1808.   1. Richard Smith (Continental Congress)

    Richard Smith March 22, 1735 September 17, 1803 was a lawyer and politician who served in the Continental Congress . Richard Smith was born in Burlington, New Jersey to Richard Smith, a member of the West Jersey Assembly, and Abigail Raper, his wife. ref Gummere, p. 526, 527 ref Smith was educated under private teachers and in Religious Society of Friends Quaker schools, and studied law. He was admitted to the bar in 1762 and practiced in Philadelphia , Pennsylvania , and later in Burlington. He was commissioned county clerk of Burlington on December 7, 1762. Smith was chosen as a New Jersey delegate to the Continental Congress from July 23, 1774, to June 12, 1776, when he resigned. He was a member of the New Jersey Legislative Council now the New Jersey Senate in 1776, and was elected treasurer of New Jersey, serving 1776 until he resigned on February 15, 1777. Smith moved to Laurens, New York , in 1790, and then to Philadelphia in 1799. He died near Natchez, Mississippi , and was interred in Natchez Cemetery.
