At that time this exploration expedition was one of the largest Dutch ever launched in the Indonesian archipelago, the expedition consisted of 8,500 troops, 4,500 servants and coolies, and a reserve of 1,500 troops was later added. Both the Dutch and Acehnese suffered from disease mostly cholera during this time. 1,400 colonial soldiers died between November 1873 and April 1874. After the Acehnese abandoned their capital, Banda Aceh , the Dutch moved into the capital on January 1874 thinking the Acehnese had surrendered and they had had won the war. They announced that the Aceh Sultanate was dissolved and that Aceh was annexed. Foreign powers thus refrained from interference, however, Acehnese resistance remained. Mahmud Syah of Aceh Sultan Mahmud Syah and his followers withdrew to the hills and jungles territory of Aceh , where Sultan Mahmud eventually died of cholera. 1. Brusilov Expedition

The Brusilov Expedition lang ru , Ekspeditsiya Brusilova was a Russian maritime expedition to the Arctic led by Captain Georgy Brusilov , which set out in 1912 to explore and map a route from the Atlantic Ocean to the Pacific via a northeast passage known as the Northern Sea Route . The expedition was ill planned and ill executed by Brusilov, and disappeared without trace. Earlier searches were unsuccessful, and its fate was not known until 2010. The expedition set out from Alexandrovsk on August 28, 1912, so late in the summer that in October the Saint Anna became locked in the polar ice of the Kara Sea off the Yamal Peninsula . Supplies were abundant, and officers and crew prepared themselves for wintering over, hoping to be freed in the following year s thaw. However, during 1913 the sea remained completely frozen. 1. Albatross expedition

Orphan date June 2009 File albatross1.jpg thumb 300px The Albatross The Albatross expedition was a Swedish oceanographic expedition that between July 4, 1947, and October 3, 1948, sailed around the world during 15 months covering 45  000  nautical miles . The expedition is considered the second largest Swedish research expedition after the Vega expedition . The expedition was carried out on board the newly built training ship of the Bostr m line, Albatross . Since the Bostr m line lent the ship at almost no cost, the expedition could be financed and carried out with only private donations. The leader of the expedition was Hans Pettersson . The main task of the expedition was to take up to 20 m long sediment cores from the ocean floor. This was made using a newly developed corer, known as piston corer , developed by B rje Kullenberg . Until then the longest cores that could be taken were 2 m. The expedition also carried out the first seismic reflection measurements of the sediment thickness, using sink bombs. The results of the sediment studies were ground breaking since they revealed that the sediment thickness increased away from the mid oceanic ridges, along with the sediment accumulation time. This was one of several evidences that eventually led to the acceptance of the theory of plate tectonics. Apart from sediments the expedition looked at biology. The first deep sea trawling, at 7  600 7  900 m depth, revealed that those depths were not the dead zone that previously had been the accepted view. The expedition was very successful, received international attention, and is considered as one of the important steps in the history of oceanography ref Reinke Kunze, Christine. 1994 Welt der Forschungsschiffe.
