The Festival includes Jewish both Hebrew and Yiddish theater, music, films, exhibits and expositions. It attempts to recreate Jewish culture from the period of Second Polish Republic interwar Poland , complete with historical buildings and atmosphere. Regular features include kosher food along with instructions as to how to prepare it in one s own kitchen , dancing, songs, crafts, ceramics and posters. Numerous workshops, discussion groups and seminars are also held on topics related to Yiddish culture. The festival is organized by the Poland Polish Israel Israeli United States American Shalom Foundation , which began in 1988 on the initiative of Go da Tencer , an actress and producer of the Jewish Theatre in Warsaw . The purpose of the foundation is the popularization of Jewish culture in Poland , and the remembrance of its Jewish communities. The first annual festival was held in 2004 on the 100th anniversary of the birthday of Isaac Bashevis Singer note that Singer s actual birth date is uncertain . Meiselsa 17 street in Krak w , Poland , was created in 1991. The idea for the Foundation nonprofit organization foundation was established already in the 1980s, influenced by the President of the Jewish community of Krak w. Committed to preserving the Jewish heritage in Krakow s old Jewish district of Kazimierz and to opening up a new platform for intercultural dialogue, the Foundation also aims at spurring interest among young people for the Jewish culture and history. The Centre for Jewish Culture run by the Judaica Foundation opened in 1993. It resides in Kazimierz at a former house of prayer Bejit ha midrasch built in the 1880s and modernized in 1989 1993. The building served religious purposes right until the outbreak of World War II. In 1993 it was thoroughly restored with the help of various organisations. Today the Centre serves as a venue for lectures, workshops and exhibitions such as the Aleksander and Alicja Hetz Annual Memorial Lecture or the Settimana della Cultura Ebraica which is organised together with the Italian Institute for Culture in Krakow.
