  1. James Gall

Refimprove date July 2007 James Gall 1808 1895 was a Scotland Scottish clergyman who founded the Carrubbers Close Mission . As well as writing on religious matters, often from a rather unorthodox standpoint, he had an interest in astronomy . It was his Easy Guide to the Constellations and his People s Atlas of the Stars that brought him to people s attention. Religious views Most of Gall s work on religion was detailed in a book called The Stars and the Angels in which he not only argues for the existence of other inhabited planet s but describes the view that Gabriel would have had on his way from heaven to earth to tell Mary, the mother of Jesus Mary that she would have a baby next Christmas . A rare, but important, work by Gall is The Synagogue Not the Temple, the Germ and Model of the Christian Church , published in 1890. It discusses the foundation upon which the Christian Church is modeled. Astronomy Gall s main work as an astronomer was with the constellations. As part of this work he developed the Gall Peters projection Gall orthographic projection , a derivative of the Lambert Cylindrical Equal Area , to project the celestial sphere onto flat paper in a manner that avoided distorting the shapes of the constellations. He also applied this technique to terrestrial mapmaking as a way to make a flat map of the round Earth. It was re invented by Arno Peters in 1967 and adopted by organisations such as UNESCO . Alphabet Gall s father, James Gall the Elder 1784 1874 , designed a Tactile alphabets for the blind triangular alphabet used for embossed books for blind people. 1. Gall's law

primary sources date January 2011 Gall s Law is a rule of thumb from John Gall author John Gall s Systemantics How Systems Really Work and How They Fail quote A complex system that works is invariably found to have evolved from a simple system that worked. The inverse proposition also appears to be true A complex system designed from scratch never works and cannot be made to work. You have to start over, beginning with a working simple system. p. 71 Systemantics a change in typography and underlining indicate that the title is better rendered as SystemANTICS is a commentary on systems theory and general semantics publications by such thinkers as Ludwig von Bertalanffy and Alfred Korzybski . Although dubbed Gall s Law by some, the actual quote is not labeled as such in the original work. The work cites Murphy s Law and the Peter Principle and is filled with similar sayings. Although the quote may seem to validate the merits of simple systems, it is preceded by the qualifier A simple system may or may not work. p.  70 . It is a greenish brown liquid mixture containing cholesterol , lecithin , taurocholic acid , and glycocholic acid . The bile obtained from the gall bladder of a bovine animal, usually a domesticated cow. It consists of a ropy, mucous, semi transparent liquid, and contains sodium salts of taurocholic and glycocholic acids, cholesterol, lecithin, etc. Ox gall is used as the expanding and binding medium for the colors used in marbling . It is necessary in all marbling, and it is important that it be pure and free from water. When in its original state it is yellowish or greenish brown, but becomes clear and dark brown when allowed to settle. The liquid is then drawn off and mixed with alcohol.
