The radicle is the embryonic root of the plant, and grows downward in the soil the shoot emerges from the plumule . Above the radicle is the embryonic Plant stem stem or hypocotyl , supporting the cotyledon s . The radicle emerges from a seed through the micropyle . Radicles in seedlings are classified into two main types. Those pointing away from the seed coat scar or Hilum biology hilum are classified as antitropous , and those pointing towards the hilum are syntropous . If the radicle begins to decay, the seedling undergoes preemergence damping off. This disease appears on the radicle as darkened spots. Eventually, it causes death of the seedling. 1. Damping off

Image Dampingoff071.jpg thumb right Affected Okra Abesmoschus esculentus sprout destroyed Damping off is the term used for a number of different fungus caused ailments that can kill seeds or seedlings before or after they germinate . The term is used most often in horticulture , where seeds are specifically planted to be germinated, especially if in warm, wet conditions which speed growth but are considered conducive to fungal attacks. Symptoms A given seed can become infected with a fungus, often causing it to darken and soften. This can kill it before the seedling emerges, or cause the seedling to be weak, sometimes getting wet patches on it which decay until it falls apart. Likewise, a seedling can be infected after it sprouts, before it leaves the ground, or even after it appears well developed, the latter often resulting in the plant mysteriously thinning right where it touches the ground, until its stem at that point rots and it falls over. Causes A number of different fungi cause these problems, including Botryotinia Botrytis , also known as grey mould . Macrophomina phaseoli Phytophthora Pythium Rhizoctonia solani Sclerotium rolfsii Thielaviopsis Prevention Damping off can be prevented in many different ways, including germination in drier conditions with better air circulation but this slows germination , starting seedlings in sterilized soil, and or spraying the soil with an anti fungal known to work for this purpose, either a commercial one or a homemade solution, such as one made from chamomile tea or garlic . 1. Kay Gray

Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Kay Gray was developed by the Wisconsin grape breeder Elmer Swenson circa 1980 and is named after a family friend. It is a seedling of Swenson s own ES 217 a cross of Minnesota 78 MN 78 and Golden Muscat . Swenson collected open pollinated seeds from this vine, and one seedling eventually became Kay Gray. Because of this, the male parent is unknown, though Swenson suspected it might be a nearby vine of Onaka grape Onaka , an old South Dakota cultivar. Kay Gray itself is female and requires a pollen source in order to set fruit. In some environments it can produce an odd flavored wine that is vastly improved by modest levels of blending. Had it not been for its exceptional disease resistance and winter hardiness it probably would not have been selected. In subsequent years Swenson used this grape as a parent for the more conventionally flavored cultivars Louise Swenson and Brianna grape Brianna . 1. Claret Ash

Image Fraxinus angustifolia broken trunk1.jpg 200px right thumb Claret Ash, Northumberland , UK The Claret Ash or Raywood Ash is a cultivar of Fraxinus ash tree, a seedling variant of the Fraxinus angustifolia Caucasian Ash Fraxinus angustifolia subsp. oxycarpa . The original seedling was discovered near a group of assorted ash trees in Sewell s nursery in the Mount Lofty Ranges in South Australia about 1910, and later grown at the nearby property Raywood Former home of the Downer family . The tree was introduced to Great Britain Britain in 1928 and to North America in 1956, although it did not become widely available there until 1979. The tree grows to around 15 20 metres and has dark green leaves that turn to a dark claret red in the autumn. The bark of the tree is notably smoother than the Caucasian Ash, which is quite apparent on those trees grafting grafted on Caucasian Ash stock. In Australia and the United States a decline or dieback in some older trees has been observed which has been attributed to a combination of environmental stress and the presence of the fungus Botryosphaeria . Often it comprises not only the soil but also a specially prepared cold frame , hotbed gardening hotbed or raised bed used to grow the seedling s in a controlled natural environment environment into larger young plants before Transplant botanical transplanting them into a garden or field agriculture field . A seedling bed is used to increase the number of seeds that germinate . The soil of a seedbed needs to be loose and smoothed, without large lumps. These traits are needed so that seeds can be planted easily, and at a specific depth for best germination. Large lumps and uneven surface would tend to make the planting depth random. Many types of seedlings also need loose soil with minimal rocky content for best conditions to grow their roots. For example, carrots grown in rocky soil will tend not to grow straight. Seedbed preparation in farm fields often involves secondary tillage via harrow tool harrows and cultivator s. This may follow primary tillage if any by moldboard plow s or chisel plow s. No till farming methods avoid tillage for seedbed preparation as well as later weed weed control . Seedbed preparation in gardens often involves secondary tillage via hand tools such as rake tool rakes and hoe tool hoes .
