Unreferenced date December 2009 Seferha Qabbalah Hebrew language Hebrew for Book of Tradition was a book authored by Abraham ibn Daud around 1161. A chronicle of the Jewish people , it contains valuable historical and philosophical information. The book is a response to Karaitic attacks against the historical legitimacy of rabbinic judaism, and contains, among other items, the controversial tale of the kidnapping by pirates of four great rabbinic scholars from Babylonian academies, whose subsequent ransoming by Jewish communities around the Mediterranean accounts for the transmission of scholarly legitimacy to the Rabbis of Jewish centers in North Africa and Spain. At the time, the term Kabbalah did not yet assume the mythical and esoteric connotations by which it is now known. Refimprove date December 2009 Seferha Ikkarim Book of Principles is a fifteenth century work by rabbi Joseph Albo , a student of Crescas . It is an eclectic, popular work, whose central task is the exposition of the principles of Judaism . ref The present state of the jews by Lancelot Addison 1676 ref Agreeing with Simeon ben Joseph of Lunel i.e. Duran , Albo held that there are three basic principles ikkarim that are necessary for the divine law to exist the existence of God, the revelation of God, the reward and punishment of God. From these three principles, Albo posited that there are eight derivative principles shorashim From the existence of God derives the principle of God s unity From the existence of God derives the principle of God s incorporeality From the existence of God derives the principle of God s timelessness From the existence of God derives the principle of God s perfection From the revelation of God derives the principle of God s omniscience From the revelation of God derives the principle of God s prophecy From the revelation of God derives the principle of the authentication of God s prophet From the reward and punishment of God derives the principle of individual providence. The denial of these principles, no less than the denial of the first three, makes one a heretic kofer be ikkar . It is understood in Albo s work that there are three kinds of law natural law, conventional law, and divine law. Natural law is the same for all persons, times, and places conventional law is ordered by a wise judge in accord with reason divine law is given by God through a prophet. reflist DEFAULTSORT SeferHa Ikkarim Category Rabbinic legal texts and responsa Category Jewish philosophical and ethical texts ... more details

Rabbinical Literature The Mekhilta le Sefer Devarim Hebrew is a halakic midrash to Deuteronomy from the school of Rabbi Ishmael which is no longer extant. No midrash by this name is mentioned in Talmudic literature, nor do the medieval authors refer to such a work. Although Maimonides says in his introduction to the Yad ha aza ah , R. Ishmael explained from we eleh shemot to the conclusion of the Torah , that is, the Mekilta, he did not see this midrash, which also includes Deuteronomy, since he does not quote any Mekilta passages to that book of the Pentateuch in his Seferha Mi wot, although he draws upon the halakic midrashim in discussing most of the commandments. Maimonides probably knew, therefore, merely through an old tradition which he had heard that such a midrash by R. Ishmael existed. Evidence in favor of its existence But there are other circumstances which prove that there was once such a work. Many midrashic baraitot to Deuteronomy are introduced in the Talmud with the words Tena debe R. Yishmael, and may be recognized in form and substance as Ishmael s midrashim comp. D. Hoffmann , Zur Einleitung in die Halachischen Midraschim, p. 77 idem, Ueber eine Mechilta zu Deuteronomium, in the Hildesheimer Jubelschrift, German part, pp. 83 98 . Bava Batra B. B. 124b quotes a passage to a verse in Deuteronomy from the She ar Sifre de Be Rab, a term by which the Mekilta de Rabbi Yishmael is designated comp. Hoffmann, l.c. p. 40 .
