  1. Selfish DNA

Not to be confused with the book The Selfish Gene . Selfish DNA refers to those sequences of DNA which, in their purest form, have two distinct properties 1 the DNA sequence spreads by forming additional copies of itself within the genome and 2 it makes no specific contribution to the reproductive success of its host organism . This idea was sketched briefly by Richard Dawkins in his 1976 book The Selfish Gene and was explicitly exposed in two 1980 articles in Nature magazine. According to one of these articles quotation The theory of natural selection, in its more general formulation, deals with the competition between replicating entities. It shows that, in such a competition, the more efficient replicators increase in number at the expense of their less efficient competitors. After a sufficient time, only the most efficient replicators survive. L.E. Orgel & F.H.C. The song was first written by Francis Healy Fran Healy in 2005 in his apartment in New York, and was demoed using Healy s own computer. He sampled the drum intro from the Iggy Pop song Lust for Life song Lust For Life , looped it to create a basic rhythm, and then played the song and recorded vocals over the top of the rhythm track. The demo was then taken to Travis drummer Neil Primrose musician Neil Primrose as an example of what to play, and thus, the song exists in its current form. The book provides an overview of the historical and philosophical debates that have continued throughout the history of evolutionary theory , and carry on to this day in debates surrounding the merits of gene centric selection and group selection models. The book is particularly critical of the popular science author Richard Dawkins claiming he portrays a brand of evolutionary theory that states natural selection acts at the level of gene to the exclusion of group selection models that state it could also act at the level of organisms or species. The book also claims Dawkins has an outdated and prescriptive way of understanding evolution that actually restricts debate rather than exciting it. Acclaim and criticism The book has provoked controversy with some online commentary claiming it is another flea , a term used by Dawkins to describe people who have published books about him or his ideas. A recent article in New Scientist titled the Dawkins Dogma contains parts of the arguments put forward within the book. The Selfish Genius has been criticized in The Economist for failing to fully understand Dawkins selfish gene metaphor, with the reviewer claiming Dawkins accommodates proposed alternative evolutionary mechanism Elsdon Baker suggests within his own ideas.
