On July 31, 1973, 18 coal miners lost their lives and a further 11 were seriously injured in a Mining accident at the Markham Colliery at Staveley, Derbyshire Staveley near Chesterfield , Derbyshire , England . Accident in 1973 A descending cage carrying the men failed to slow down as it approached the bottom of the mine shaft and 18 miners were killed by the impact. The accident was caused by fracture of the brake rod, when a slowly growing fatigue material fatigue crack reached a critical size and the brake rod parted. Following a thorough investigation it was found that metal fatigue failure occurred in the braking mechanism used to slow down the cage as it descended. Underground Explosion in 1938 It was the second major disaster at the colliery following an underground explosion in 1938 that killed 79 miners and seriously injured 40 others. The Mauricewood CollieryDisaster , occurred at the Mauricewood Colliery , near Glencorse , Lothian , Scotland on 17 December 1886, killing 63 miners. At the time the mine was owned by the Shotts Iron Company Ltd. Fire and rescue operation On 17 December 1886 at around noon sections of the wood lining of the Mauricewood Colliery ignited and the ensuing fire spread to a nearby coal seam. The Cambrian Colliery was a large coal mine that operated between 1872 and 1967 near Clydach Vale in the Rhondda Valley, south Wales . It is notable for its huge production and for two infamous explosion disasters, in 1905 and 1965, in which a total of 64 miners were killed. Its owners sank the first pits into a rich coal seam in the 1870s from which, within 20 years, over 700 tons were being extracted daily.
