This wildflower is native from California through Nevada to Utah , where it grows in moist areas, especially in desert mountains. Description Dodecatheon redolens is a hairy, thick rooted perennial with long, clumping leaves around the base. It erects slim, tall, hairy stems which are dark in color and are topped with inflorescence s of 5 to 10 showy flowers. Each flower nods with its mouth pointed to the ground when new, and becomes more erect with age. It has five reflexed sepal s in shades of pink, lavender, or white which lie back against the body of the flower. Each sepal base has a blotch of bright yellow and is folded into a thick lip around the mouth of the flower. From the corolla mouth protrude large stamen anthers which may be light pink to nearly black surrounding a threadlike Gynoecium stigma . It is Endemism endemic to California , where it is a common plant in several different habitat types, including the chaparral plant community. Description Lepechinia calycina is an aromatic shrub with parts of its bark covered in long hairs, some of which have resin glands in them. The leaves are lance shaped to roughly oval and are sometimes toothed along the edges. The shrub flowers in loose raceme inflorescence s. Each flower is encased in a cuplike calyx of sepal s which are green when new and age to reddish purple. The somewhat cylindrical corolla of the flower is white to light lavender and is rolled back at the tip into four small lips and one longer lip. The tiny fruit develops within the sepal cup after the flower falls. The fruit is rounded, dark in color, and slightly hairy. Uses The Miwok , a Native American group of California, used an extract of the leaves of this plant to treat fever and headache .
