Sergius V was the son and successor of John V of Naples John V as Duke of Naples from 1042 to 1082. In Summer 1074, hostilities flared up between Richard I of Capua and Robert Guiscard . Sergius allied with the latter and made his city a supply centre for Guiscard s troops. This pitted him against Aversa and Capua , while Richard I was supported by the pope. Sergius soon opened negotiations with Pope Gregory VII , as he had barely escaped destruction in June. In 999, he was captured and taken a prisoner first to Capua , then back to Germany by Otto III , the Holy Roman Emperor , who had just visited Saint Nilus the Younger in Gaeta . During his absence, Naples seems to have continued in allegiance to the Greeks, though it was technically governed by Adhemar of Spoleto . In 1002, John reappears in his duchy, probably released by Otto s successor, Henry II, Holy Roman Emperor Henry II . John had one son, Sergius IV of Naples Sergius , who succeeded him, and two daughters. The elder was Sichelgaita whose name may imply that John had a Lombards Lombard wife , who married John IV of Gaeta and thus cemented alliance between her brother and Duke John V of Gaeta . A second daughter is recorded unnamed by Amatus of Montecassino as having been widowed by the count of Gaeta and remarrying soon after to Ranulf Drengot , the Normans Norman count of Aversa . Sergius Orata fl. c. 95 BC was a famed merchant and hydraulic engineer of the Roman Republic . Sergius was well known by his contemporaries because of the breeding and commercialization of oyster s, for which he was an innovator. Orata wanted to take advantage of Romans liking for shellfish as food, so he developed a new system for breeding oysters. He constructed channels and preys to control Tides sea tides , as well as high vaults over Lucrinus Lacus Lucrine Lake in Campania. He was also credited by Vitruvius with the invention of the hypocaust underfloor heating , although this is not fully confirmed. What seems certain is that he invented a type of hanging baths balneae pensiles , some kind of relaxing thermal baths they are usually considered to be hypocausts. He commercialized them as successfully as the oysters. He used to buy Roman villa villas , construct the baths, and then resell them at greater prices. Romans said of Sergius that he could breed oysters on the roof of his house. Sergius Orata became rich due to his inventions he was distinguished for his love for luxury and refinement. Sergius of Reshaina died 536 was an ancient Syriacs Syriac physician and priest during the 6th century. He is best known for translating medical works from Greek language Greek to Syriac , which were eventually translated to Arabic . Reshaina, where he lived, is located about midway between the then intellectual centres of Edessa, Mesopotamia Edessa and Nisibis , in Northern Mesapotamia . The great ninth century translator Hunain ibn Ishaq gives the names of twenty six medical texts by Galen which Sergius translated into Syriac these were the first significant translations of medical works from Greek into a Semitic language , and presumably were the textbooks Sergius himself had used when he studied at Alexandria . Hunain is not always complimentary about Sergius s translations though some he thinks are better, as Sergius became more experienced. Sergius also translated various other works, including the Categories Aristotle Categories of Aristotle , Porphyry philosopher Porphyry s Introduction to the Categories and theological works by Pseudo Dionysius the Areopagite . He also composed two works of his own, On the Influence of the Moon , and The Movement on the Sun , probably drawing heavily on Greek sources. Although Sergius kept in close contact with the mostly Nestorian Christian Nestorian scholars nearby, he was himself in fact a Monophysite Christian priest. In 535 he was sent to Rome by Ephrem of Amid Ephrem , Orthodox Patriarch of Antioch , and escorted Pope Agapetus I to Constantinople . There he died, the following year.
