This region contains outstanding biodiversity in endemism and species richness of flora, mammal, bird, and herpetofauna. More than half of the original forest has been altered. Setting The Bahia coastalforests occupy a belt approximately convert 150 km mi abbr on wide along the Atlantic Ocean Atlantic coast of eastern Brazil, in the states of Bahia and Espirito Santo . The Itapicuru River forms the northern boundary of the ecoregion, which extends south to near the Itapemirim River . The ecoregion is bounded on the east by the Atlantic Ocean and the enclaves of the Atlantic Coast restingas forests and Bahia mangroves . To the west, the forests transition to the drier Bahia interior forests . The forests cover Tertiary sedimentary plateaus extending from near the seacoast westward to the lower slopes of the Serra da Mantiqueira . The prevalent soils are tropical nutrient poor yellow red latosol and podzol s. Climate The ecoregion has a tropical climate with annual rainfall ranging from 1,200 to 1,800  mm, evenly distributed throughout the year. Serra do Bussaco , also Bu aco is a mountain range in Portugal , formerly included in the province of Beira Litoral Province Beira Litoral . The highest point in the range is the Cruz Alta 1795  feet , which commands a magnificent view over the Serra da Estrela , the Mondego River valley and the Atlantic Ocean. The Serra includes the buildings of a secularized Carmelite monastery, founded in 1628. The convent woods have long been famous for their cypress, plane, evergreen oak, cork and other forest trees, many of which have stood for centuries and attained an immense size. A bull of Pope Gregory XV 1623 , anathematizing trespassers and forbidding women to approach, is inscribed on a tablet at the main entrance another bull, of Pope Urban VIII 1643 , threatens with excommunication any person harming the trees. Towards the close of the 19th century the Serra de Bussaco became one of the regular halting places for foreign, and especially for British, tourists, on the overland route between Lisbon and Porto . The Palace Hotel of Bussaco Pal cio Hotel do Bu aco , built between 1888 and 1905 in an exuberant Neo Manueline style, is still a magnet for tourists.
