S. Lewis , conversion to Christianity and subsequent tragedy. It was first published in 1977. The book is strongly influenced, at least stylistically, by the Evelyn Waugh novel Brideshead Revisited . The book was followed by a sequel, Under the Mercy , first published in 1985. The book is, in a sense, made up of two distinct parts the first chronicles the love story of Vanauken and his wife, a love he refers to as pagan. The couple pledged always to put their love before all else, and the intensity of their devotion to one another and their exclusivity makes up the early chapters. However, as Vanauken or Van and his wife, Jean Davis or Davy, explore Christianity and are gradually converted, the primacy of their love for one another comes into question for both of them though Vanauken s conversion is somewhat slower and more reluctant. His analysis is aided by a correspondence with C.S. Lewis, then an Oxford Don, and some of Lewis s letters are reprinted in the book. Upper respiratory tract infection s are probably the most common infections in the world. Most of the respiratory tract exists merely as a piping system for air to travel in the lungs, and alveoli are the only part of the lung that exchanges oxygen and carbon dioxide with the blood . Moving down the respiratory tract starting at the trachea, the tubes get smaller and divide into more and more tubes. There are estimated to be about 20 to 23 divisions, ending up at an alveolus. Even though the cross sectional area of each bronchus or bronchiole is smaller, because there are so many, the total surface area is larger. This means there is less resistance at the terminal bronchioles. Most resistance is around the 3 4 division from the trachea due to turbulence.
