About a biblical location Expert subject Religion date November 2008 Unreferenced date December 2008 File Givatamore.jpg 250px thumb right Givet Hamoreh Moreh hill south of Mount Tabor Moreh is a name of a location, commonly used in the Book of Genesis Genesis . Torah locality Translators who consider the obscure elon moreh of Genesis 12 6 to be the name of a locality, render it as the plains of Moreh . Translators who consider the term to be a sacred tree or grove, often render it terebinth , a tree notable for its size and age in dry landscapes of the region. The noble terebinth is a member of the pistachio and sumac family. Thus for them, at Shechem , grew the terebinth s, elone moreh Abraham passed through the land as far as the site of Shechem, at the Terebinths of Moreh. The Caananites were then in the land Genesis 12 6 . This tree or grove, with a name that must mean teacher, oracle was a landmark in the area called the plains of Moreh Deuteronomy 11 30 or the hill of Moreh Judges 7 1 . Genesis 35 4 And they gave unto Jacob all the strange gods which were in their hand, and all their earrings which were in their ears and Jacob hid them under the oak which was by Shechem. A neutral reading discovers that the tree, oak or not, grew above buried idols and dedicated treasure, the Hebrews remembered, and they associated the burial of these things with the patriarchal age . The site of Moreh, a hill by which Gideon camped before he attacked the Midianites, is sometimes identified with modern Nebi Dahi , Israel, south of Mount Tabor but this has not been confirmed on the ground. Mutbaal Akkadian language Akk. man of Baal was a Canaan Canaanite king of the Amarna Period . He is identified in the Amarna letters as a son of Labaya , the ruler of the hill country north of Jerusalem, including the territory in the vicinity of the city of Shechem Shachmu biblical Shechem . Mutbaal may be the son whose association with the Habiru raiders Labaya denounced in EA 254. He ruled in Pella, Jordan Pella on the eastern side of the Jordan river . After his father s death at the hands of the citizens of Gina Canaan Gina , Mutbaal and his brother continued their assaults on other Canaanite rulers and their holdings, employing Habiru mercenaries. Eventually Biryawaza of Damascus was ordered by the Ancient Egypt Egyptian court to take armed action against the sons of Labaya. EA 250 David Rohl and a minority of scholars identify Mutbaal with Ishbaal or Ish bosheth, the son of the Israelite King Saul , but the chronology that would make this identification feasible is not accepted by the majority of scholars. It cannot be denied that the names have exactly the same meaning, but two people may have the same name and still belong to different time periods. Another interesting parallel is that while both fathers Labaya, Saul had their capitals west of the Jordan, the sons had theirs in Transjordan . In Rohl s historical view, it would not have been Mutbaal but Jonathan 1 Samuel Jonathan who displeased Labaya by associating with the Habiru. Mutbaal s brother in the post Labaya period would be David , his brother in law.
