Refugee shelters include the most basic kind of structure created in the aftermath of a conflict or natural disaster as a temporary residence for victims who have lost or abandoned their homes. There is a continuum ranging from the most temporary tent accommodation through transitional shelter to rebuilding houses and settlements. Land tenure issues often play a large role in the planning and categorisation of settlements as temporary, though many settlements subsist for years. The materials and technology used to create these shelters have advanced as a result of worldwide news coverage of natural disasters in the new millennium. Simple tent structures, grouped together to form a tent city , are commonly made of canvas military issue tents which are criticised for being heavy, bulky, uninsulated, expensive, and for rotting in under a year. There are scores of innovative approaches to constructing temporary shelters, but few make it to the field. Architect Shigeru Ban has designed temporary and permanent structures with paper tubes as the underlying structure, used after the Kobe earthquake . Cal Earth Institute has also developed superadobe which makes use of sandbag s and barbed wire to form an emergency shelter for disaster relief . The main difficulty with refugee shelters is transporting the materials to areas with damaged infrastructure, so the overall cost of deploying a shelter is largely proportional to its weight. Disaster responses are increasingly focusing on supporting victims to build their own shelters as this stimulates the local economy, maintains dignity, gives victims something other than their grief to focus on, and encourages a sense of ownership of the shelter and of the materials. Unreferenced date October 2010 The shelter rule is a doctrine in the common law of Property law property under which a grantee who has received an interest in property from a bona fide purchaser will also be protected as a bona fide purchaser, even if the grantee would not legally qualify for this status. The grantee is sheltered from other claims by the grantor s status as an actual bona fide purchaser. This rule comes into play in situations under a number of circumstances. For example, where a bad actor agrees to convey the same real property to multiple other parties. For example, if Oscar conveys Blackacre by deed to Andrew on Monday before Andrew records the conveyance, Oscar conveys Blackacre to Bob, who is a bona fide purchaser and who is unaware of Oscar s previous conveyance of the same property. Bob then conveys Blackacre to Charles, but before the conveyance, Andrew notifies Charles of the deed conveyed from Oscar to Andrew. Since Charles has notice of the prior conveyance, Charles does not qualify to be a bona fide purchaser. However, under the shelter rule, Charles will receive the same treatment as Bob, and will prevail over Andrew in a legal contest over the ownership Blackacre. The rule has several purposes. One is to allow a bona fide purchaser, who is entitled to hold and enjoy the property, to have a congruent entitlement to sell that property. Another is to prevent the use of the property from being held up in litigation. There are two exceptions to the shelter rule Where the property is reconveyed by the good faith purchaser to an original grantor who had notice of an outstanding interest in the property. Where the property is conveyed by the good faith purchaser to a person who had violated a trust or duty with respect to the property. The shelter rule also applies to the transfer of negotiable instrument s. If the recipient of a negotiable interest ... of the same instrument, the shelter rule gives the donee the right to recover on the instrument. Category ... more details

File Casa Grande under shelter.jpg 300px right thumb The Olmsted ramada over the Big House of Casa Grande National Monument in Arizona . For the hotel chain, see Ramada In the southwestern United States , a ramada is a temporary or permanent shelter equipped with a roof but no walls, or only partially enclosed. Ramadas have traditionally been constructed with branches or bushes by Indigenous peoples of the Americas aboriginal Americans living in the region. However, the term today is also applied to permanent concrete, wooden, or steel structures used to shelter objects or people from the sun. For example, public parks in desert areas of the United States may contain ramadas with picnic tables, restrooms, water sources, etc. Since sunlight is more of an environmental hazard than wind or snow or rain in this part of the world, a roof alone provides substantial shelter, even if there are no walls. An example of a large modern day ramada can be seen at the Casa Grande Ruins National Monument in Arizona, where it is used to protect ancient ruins.
