notability date October 2010 BalanceTheory is a motivational theory of attitude change, proposed by Fritz Heider Harvard citation Heider 1958 , which conceptualizes the consistency motive as a drive toward psychological balance. Heider proposed that sentiment or liking relationships are balanced if the affect Valence psychology valence in a system multiplies out to a positive result. For example a Person P who likes an Other O person will be balanced by the same valence attitude on behalf of the other. Symbolically, P O and P O results in psychological balance. This can be extended to objects X as well, thus introducing triadic relationships. If a person P likes object X but dislikes other person O, what does P feel upon learning that O created X? This is symbolized as such P X P O O X Multiplying the signs shows that the person will perceive imbalance a negative multiplicative product in this relationship, and will be motivated to correct the imbalance somehow. The Person can either Decide that O isn t so bad after all, Decide that X isn t as great as originally thought, or Conclude that O couldn t really have made X. Any of these will result in psychological balance, thus resolving the dilemma and satisfying the drive. Person P could also avoid object X and other person O entirely, lessening the stress created by psychological imbalance. BalanceTheory is also useful in examining how Testimonial celebrity endorsement affects consumers Attitude psychology attitudes toward products. If a person likes a celebrity and perceives due to the endorsement that said celebrity likes a product, said person will tend to liking the product more, in order to achieve psychological balance. However, if the person already had a dislike for the product being endorsed by the celebrity, she ... balance. Social balancetheory is a class of theories within social network theory which attempts to describe how individual desires to reduce affective cognitive dissonance influence in a gtant component among social agents is sentiment . These sentiments can result in the emergence of two groups. Disliking exists between the two subgroups within liking agents. Development of the Theory This theory evolved over time to produce models more closely resembling real world social networks. It uses a balance index to measure the effect of local balance on that of a global level and also on a more intimate level, like in interpersonal relationships. Cartwright and Harary introduced clustering to account for multiple social cliques . Davis introduced hierarchal clustering to account for asymmetric relations. refimprove date December 2009 Short shifting is a driving technique in which the gear ratio gear is changed up before necessary. By short shifting, not all of the Internal combustion engine engine s power from the previous gear is being used, therefore power and torque are lost. The most common reason to change gear early during fast driving is to not lose valuable time changing gear later. Although this means not being able to accelerate using all of the engine s power, there is a time saving from changing gear later on. This can aid overtaking by ensuring that the car is in the right gear in anticipation of the maneuver. Another reason is to improve fuel economy by driving at lower rpm if acceleration is not what is being sought. Another reason is to intentionally reduce power and torque, to get more grip. For example, if there is a wet road, there is an increased chance of sliding or wheel spin . If the gear is changed up, these difficulties are reduced. Short shifting is a technique that can help to maintain vehicle stability through bends by avoiding an unsettling shift in balance mid corner. Progressive shifting is a technique for changing gears commonly practiced by driving driver s of semi trailer truck s. It is meant to reduce fuel consumption &mdash something very important for drivers who travel several hundred miles each day. Progressive shifting is accomplished by changing gears upward as early as possible when accelerating, while staying within the torque range. Each shift will go a little higher into the RPM, until the vehicle is in its top gear at cruising speed. After each shift is completed, the engine and transmission mechanics transmission should be operating at or near the lowest Revolutions per minute rpm speeds recommended by the manufacturers of those parts. When done properly, progressive shifting often results in quicker acceleration because diesel engine s produce the most torque in lower rpm ranges. Fact date April 2008 Additionally, this technique reduces wear on the transmission because synchronizer automotive synchronizer s only need to compensate for relatively small differences in rotational speed between different components in the gearbox. As defined by KE 1 2 mv 2, acceleration is the process of gaining kinetic energy, so greater the power delivered, the quicker it gains kinetic energy. The best average acceleration in a truck with a Caterpillar C15 engine is achieved by going all the way up to 1950RPM, then shifting to a gear that will put the engine at 1500RPM, so that the truck is receiving as close as possible to maximum power throughout the entire time it is accelerating. This, however, is not progressive shifting, and has increased fuel consumption and wear on the motor. Shifting at peak torque doesn t provide the maximum acceleration as even the engine maybe making the maximum torque , with each up shift, the mechanical advantage of the transmission is reduced. references Category Trucks ... more details

If the amount of money saved through walking to work is eventually spent on an extra city break involving air travel the net emissions may well increase. The problem of carbon shifting may undermine many voluntary piecemeal attempts at reducing carbon dioxide emissions. However, carbon shifting is not inherently negative. If a person can be persuaded to avoid activities that produce a high level of emissions for a given financial outlay then they may shift to activities that produce lower emissions for that same amount of money. Positive carbon shifting might be encouraged through the use of a carbon tax or the implementation of a Personal carbon trading scheme. Collingwood is a poor suburb populated by lower class Australian families and Italian people Italian immigration immigrants . The play published in 1960 by Angus & Robertson begins with two pages of stage direction. It describes the home of Italians Mr. & Mrs. Vicenzo Bianchi, the stage is their backyard. On stage left there is a large garbage can that is overfilled, the overflow is in a small household bucket. On each side of the stage is the wall of the neighbours. On stage left is the wall between the Pratt family, Leila and Donny. The wall is a fence that relaxes in the wind and shows an air of dilapidation . The boards are able to be pushed apart enough to let the Pratts enter the Bianchis backyard. On stage right there is a wall described as a formidable barrier , complete with a length of barbed wire across the top. It is low enough for the woman living there to toss garbage over. In the first pages of dialog and notes in the stage direction, it is clear that there is a war going on between the family living stage right against the Bianchis because they are Italian. The Pratt family is on the side of the Bianchi family.
