The ShulbaSutras or ulbas tras Sanskrit IAST ulba string, cord, rope are sutra texts belonging to the rauta ritual and containing geometry related to fire altar construction. Purpose and origins The ShulbaSutras are part of the larger corpus of texts called the Shrauta Sutra s, considered to be appendices to the Vedas . They are the only sources of knowledge of Indian mathematics from the Vedic period . Unique fire altar shapes were associated with unique gifts from the Gods. For instance, he who desires heaven is to construct a fire altar in the form of a falcon a fire altar in the form of a tortoise is to be constructed by one desiring to win the world of Brahman and those who wish to destroy existing and future enemies should construct a fire altar in the form of a rhombus . ref name Plofker 387 cite book first Kim last Plofker year 2007 title quote Certain shapes and sizes of fire ... ritual on that account. page 387 ref The four major ShulbaSutras, which are mathematically the most ... theories about the origin of the geometry that is found in the Shulbasutras, and of geometry .... page 208 ref List of ShulbaSutras The following ShulbaSutras exist in print or manuscript Apastamba ... in manuscript Hiranyakeshin similar to Apastamba ShulbaSutras Further reading Parameswaran Moorthiyedath ... The B rhaspatya s tras a patronymic of Brhaspati , also Lok yata materialistic , atheistic sutras were the foundational text of the C rv ka school of materialist nastika philosophy. Probably dating to the final centuries BC the Maurya Mauryan period , these texts have been lost, and are known only from fragmentary quotations. Dakshinaranjan Shastri in 1928 published 60 such verses. In 1959, he published 54 selected verses as Barhaspatya sutram . Shastri was of the opinion that many more fragments could be recovered. Bhattacharya 2002 attempts a new reconstruction, with the caveat that the more verses are listed, the greater the uncertainty that it will be either misquoted or foreign materials included as a part of the text. Most of the fragments are found in works dated to the Indian Middle Ages, between roughly the 8th and 12th centuries. The extensive 14th century treatise on Indian philosophy by Sayana , the Sarvadarshanasamgraha , gives a detailed account of C rv ka, but it doesn t quote C rv ka texts directly, instead paraphrasing the doctrine according to the understanding of a learned 14th century Vedantin. ChineseText The Jesus Sutras are early Chinese language manuscripts of Christian teachings. They are connected with the 7th century mission of Alopen , a Nestorian Church Nestorian bishop from Persia . The sutra s date from between 635 AD, the year of Alopen s arrival in China, and around 1000 AD when the cave at Mogao Caves Mogao near Dunhuang in which the documents were discovered was sealed. Four of the sutras are now 2011 known to be located in a private collection in Japan , while one is in Paris . Their language and content reflect varying levels of interaction with Chinese culture, including use of Buddhist and Taoist terminology. List of sutras The following list gives some approximate English titles for the various writings, and an indication of the present location of the manuscript where known. Scholars are still debating the best translation for many of the terms. Until a good modern edition appears, P. Saeki remains the most convenient source for the Chinese texts. Refimprove date December 2006 Shiva Sutras are a collection of seventy seven aphorism s that form the foundation of the tradition of spiritual mysticism known as Kashmir Shaivism . They are attributed to the sage Vasugupta of the 8th century C.E. Vasugupta is said to have lived near Mahadeva Mountain in the valley of the Harvan stream behind the what are now the Shalimar Gardens near Srinagar . One myth is that he received the aphorisms in a dream visitation of a Siddha or semi divine being. Another is that Lord Shiva came to him in a dream and instructed him to go to a certain rock on which he would find the teachings inscribed. This rock called Shankaropala is still visited by devotees. The other theory is that Lord Shiva taught the Siva Sutras to Vasugupta in a dream. Whatever the truth is these myths point to the traditions belief that the Shiva sutras are of divine origin or revelation and are not considered the product of the human mind. Historically the Shiva Sutras and the ensuing school of Kashmir Shaivism are a Tantra Tantric or Agamic tradition. The Tantrics saw themselves as independent of the vedic period Vedic mainstream schools of thought and practice, and as beyond the rules that had been put in place by them. A number of commentaries were written by Vasugupta s contemporaries or successors. Most famous of them is Kshemeraja s Vimarshini 10th Century C.E. which has ... . Vasugupta 860&ndash 925 was the author of the famous Shiva Sutras of Vasugupta . The author was believed to have amassed knowledge and recognition through direct realization. He was a native of Kashmir and was a great devotee of Lord Shiva . One night Shiva appeared to Vasugupta in a dream and instructed him to go to a particular place called Harvan. There in the forest of Myna he found a large rock nestled on the side of a small stream. By his mere touch the huge rock turned over and the mysteriously inscribed Shiva Sutras were revealed to Vasugupta. This rock became known as Shankar Pal or the rock of Shiva. Even today devout Kashmiri Saivas pray at the destined place. Vasugupta also wrote the Spanda Karikas as a commentary on the Shiva Sutras. He paved the way for later scholars for a cultural and religious renaissance in Kashmir which continued for four centuries till the forcible advent of Islam.
