  1. Zimuto Siding

Refimprove date June 2007 Zimuto Siding pronounced correctly as ZeeMooToe Siding, is named in the ChiKaranga language spoken locally after Chief Zimuto in whose area it is located. Zi is a word prefix denoting large size, and Muto is a noun meaning soup. So literally Zimuto means a large amount of soup. The colonial settlers named the siding after the local chief Zimuto but due to their poor understanding of the pronunciation wrote the name as they would pronounce it and not as it is actually pronounced. The name Zimutu was put down as the official name and appears on some old maps and on rail road documents. It is meaningless and led to confusion as locals spelt is as Zimuto, and the settlers spelt as Zimutu. After inderpendence in 1980, most local names were revised and spelt correctly. Because many documents were generated during the colonial years, researchers must always assume that Zimutu is the same place as Zimuto. Brief Zimuto Siding is a small Railroad stop over place in the Masvingo Province of Zimbabwe . It is located north of Masvingo on the Masvingo Gweru railwayline. It was developed as a siding initially before being commercialised. It is as old as the railway line itself and was strategically chosen to serve as a waterring hole for the then steam locomotives used as rail power, and requiring water top ups along the journey. 1. Whitrope Siding

Whitrope Siding was a trailing short siding or spur off the up southbound line, an associated trailing cross over between up and down lines, a pair of railway cottages and a signal box on the Waverley Line or Waverley Route. It is approximately 300 metres south from Whitrope Tunnel , and 4km from Hermitage, Scottish Borders . Whitrope Heritage Centre Waverley Route Heritage Association maintains a small museum of old Waverley Route related artefacts and photographs within a static carriage together with an adjoining buffet carriage. As of 2009 there is a short halt platform on the down side with over convert 750 m yd abbr on of track laid from the tunnel over the summit southward towards Bridge 200. With a Railway Order currently being applied for the intention is to get some form of traction to run on a short section until more track is laid. There is also a plan to rebuild a replica of the Whitrope Signal Box, as well as to extend the running line southwards to the former Riccarton Junction site and to survey the Whitrope Tunnel to determine if a northwards extension through it would be possible. 1. Boulton's Siding

nofootnotes date March 2011 refimprove date March 2011 Boulton s Siding was a British locomotive hire business owned by Isaac Watt Boulton and situated alongside the Oldham branch of the Manchester, Sheffield and Lincolnshire Railway at Ashton under Lyne . It operated from 1864 to 1898. Overview In the 1860s, established railway companies were replacing their small 2 2 0 and 0 4 0 steam locomotive s with larger, more modern machines. Mr I. W. Boulton took advantage of this by buying up some of the old locomotives, modifying them in his workshop, and hiring them out to contractors for use on civil engineering projects, including the building of new railways. The usual modifications were to fit smaller driving wheel s to increase tractive effort and to convert tender locomotive s to tank locomotive s. By the 1880s, the hire business was declining so Mr Boulton started building new locomotives. He used his own patent design of boiler which had a single large flue with cross water tubes. This was, essentially, a horizontal predecessor of the vertical water tube boilers later used in Sentinel Waggon Works Sentinel Steam Waggons . Although Boulton s boilers steamed well, they were difficult to repair so they never became popular. The business declined during the 1890s and closed in 1898. Mr Boulton died in 1899.
