  1. Siege of Jerusalem (1244)

hatnote For other sieges laid upon the city of Jerusalem in history, see Siege of Jerusalem . The 1244 Siege of Jerusalem took place during the Sixth Crusade , when the Khwarezm conquered the city on July 15, 1244. As context, Frederick II, Holy Roman Emperor led the Sixth Crusade to the Holy Land in 1228, and claimed the kingship of Jerusalem by right of his wife, Queen Yolande of Jerusalem , who had inherited the title of Queen of Jerusalem from her mother, Maria of Montferrat , the wife of John of Brienne . The size of Frederick II s army and his reputation within the Islam ic world was sufficient to regain Jerusalem, Bethlehem , Nazareth and a number of neighbouring castles without violence. These were recovered by treaty with the Ayyubid Sultan Al Kamil . However, Jerusalem did not remain for long in Christian hands, as there was not enough territory around it in Christian hands to make it defensible. The Ayyubids invited the Khwarazmian dynasty Khwarazmian Turks clans to reconquer the city. In the siege and subsequent fall of the city on July 15, 1244 the Khwarezmians completely razed Jerusalem, leaving it in ruins and useless to both Christians and Muslims. 1. Siege of Jerusalem (poem)

Siege of Jerusalem is the title commonly given to an anonymous Middle English Epic poetry epic poem created in the second half of the 14th century possibly ca. 1370 1380 . The poem is composed in the alliterative manner popular in middle ages medieval English poetry, especially during the period known as the alliterative revival , and is known from nine surviving manuscripts, an uncommonly high number for works of this time. The siege described in the poem is that of 70 AD. The poem relies on a number of secondary sources&mdash including Vindicta salvatoris , Roger Argenteuil s Bible en Fran ois , Ranulf Higdon Ranulf Higdon s Polychronicon , and the Destruction of Troy &mdash and on Josephus Josephus The Jewish War , which was itself a source for the Polychronicon . The destruction of Jerusalem is ahistorically portrayed as divinely ordained vengeance by the Ancient Rome Romans Vespasian and Titus for the death of Jesus Christ . The poem also describes the tumultuous succession of emperors in Rome in the late 60s, when rulers Nero , Galba , Otho and Vitellius met violent deaths. Although technically excellent and linguistically interesting, the poem has rarely been presented to students of Middle English verse because of its Sadomasochism sadistic indulgence in gory details and extreme anti Semitic sentiment. This latter aspect of the poem raises important questions regarding the culture cultural milieu in which it was repeatedly copied and presumably read. Many modern critics have treated the poem with near contempt due to its excessive descriptions of violence, such as the horrible execution of the Jewish high priests or the cannibalism of her own child by a Jewish woman ... camelot teams livfrm.htm Text of Siege of Jerusalem with modern English translation ... livint.htm Introduction to Siege of Jerusalem by Michael Livingston, TEAMS Middle English Text Series http www.lib.rochester.edu camelot teams livbib.htm Bibliography of works related to Siege of Jerusalem ...   more details

On 18 May fighting broke out in Hebron and on 21 May 6 7,000 rebels marched on Jerusalem . At the time the city had a garrison of some 2,000 men with Ibrahim Pasha based at his headquarters in Jaffa . His troops in Jerusalem closed the city gates, and stationed 5 600 soldiers at the Jaffa Gate where the first attack was expected. On the 22 May 1,000 troops marched out of the city hoping to engage the rebels but failed to make contact with them. They returned to the city after sacking the village of Lifta . That night there was much shooting from outside the walls. On 26 May the siege commenced with no food or water getting into the city. The defenders had two cannons that they moved around the walls to disperse attacks. They could not rely on the loyalty of the city s Muslims and had to remain on duty day and night. In the early afternoon of the 26th the area was shaken by two earthquakes with after shocks and further strong quakes occurring until after midnight. The rebels continued firing throughout.
