cleanup date June 2011 Ann Naddodsd ttir lang non Ann Naddo sd ttir mid 9th century, Faroes ? early 10th century, Bressay , Shetland was likely a daughter of Naddoddr , the Viking attributed with the discovery of Iceland . At the cemetery of a church in Bressay, Shetland there was in 1864 found a grave from the early 10th century with Christian crosses and decorations of Scandinavia Scandinavian origins. Katherine Forsyth from Harvard University managed in 1996 to decipher the text. In the front it says CRROSCC NAHHTVVDDAddS DATTRR Ann and on the back BEN s iSESMEQQDDRoANN According to Dr. Forsyth and other previous scientists it can be translate in Old Norwegian to in the front HER KROSSUR NADDODDSD TTIR ANN and on the back AV BEINIR SONUR DR IN Descendant theory Forsyth says that this Ann Naddodsd ttir was a Faroese Viking. 1. Heri

Unreferenced date December 2009 Infobox given name name H ri image imagesize caption pronunciation Here e gender Male meaning Hare Dubious date December 2011 region Faroe Islands Faroese origin Flateyjarb k related names footnotes wiktionary Appendix Proto Germanic harjaz H ri is a male given name in the Faroe Islands . The earliest mention of the name is in the Flateyjarb k in which the spelling is H ri , partly concerning the Viking age history of the Faroe Islands , written around 1380 in Iceland . In this story Heri Sigmundsson is the youngest son of Sigmundur Brestisson . Heri is a very common name in the Faroe Islands today, probably not surviving as a traditional name, but more likely revived and put into use again in later times from historical accounts like Flateyjarb k. There are two explanations for the meaning of the name The more likely dubious date December 2011 is that it means hare lepus europaeus , for which the common modern Icelandic name is still H ri. In the Faroes the name is Hara, but it is probably a Norwegian loanword taken into the Faroese language at the time of the introduction of the hare to the Faroe Islands. There is one problem with this explanation. Flateyjarb k was written by men who had clearly never been to the Faroe Islands and neither Heri nor H ri seem to have ever been given names in Iceland so this is also connected to the problem of whether or not Flateyjarb k is a reliable historical account . The less likely dubious date December 2011 is that Heri is an abbreviation of Norse names beginning with Her , like Her lfur, Herleifur, Hergeir etc. Very many Faroese and Icelandic given male names have common abbreviations ending on an i, but this explanation does not account for the original spelling with the accent over the e , H ri. People called H ri Prominent Faroese men named Heri include Heri Joensen , vocals and guitar of Faroese metal band T r Heri Vestergaard, strongest man of the Islands Heri Joensen, priest Heri Thomsen, ...   more details

The former Catholic Diocese of the Faroe Islands existed from the eleventh century to the Protestant Reformation . The Faroe Islands are now included in the Roman Catholic Diocese of Copenhagen . He was eventually attacked at his home by his first forced convert, Tr ndur G tu , swam to another island to escape, and was finally killed by a farmer for his gold jewelry. There is some confusion as to when the first bishop for the islands was consecrated, as Adam of Bremen notes that a self proclaimed bishop of Helgoland was referred to in Latin as the bishop of Farria. The bishops of the Faroe Islands were usually chosen from the canons of the Diocese of Bergen and were originally suffragan s of the Archdiocese of Hamburg Bremen . The diocese was granted to Archdiocese of Lund Lund in 1104 and then Archdiocese of Nidaros Nidaros after 1152. The see was based at Kirkjub ur , which legend holds was given to Bishop Orm by G sa Sigursdottir as a penance for her having eaten meat during Lent . Some of the bishops are known to have kept mistresses, and it was reported that clergy in the Faroes would on occasion demand Droit de seigneur prima nocte rights. Amund Olafson was the last Roman Catholic bishop of the islands and was forced to yield his see and title to the Lutheran Superintendent ecclesiastical superintendent Jens Riber . Later, only provosts were elected. The Catholic clergy were unable to resist the advance of Lutheranism . By the end of sixteenth century, the Catholic faith had disappeared. In the Catholic epa, at least, no little attention paid to the construction and adornment of churches, as may be seen from the ruins of the unfinished Magnus Cathedral of Kirkjub ur . Image Faroe stamp 281 catholic church1.jpg thumb right St. Mary s Church in T rshavn The history of Roman Catholic Church in the Faroe Islands goes back to the year 999, when king Olav Tryggvason of Norway sent Sigmundur Brestisson on a mission to the islands with several priests. The islands became an independent diocese in 1111, but were officially Protestant reformation reformed in 1537 and the last Catholic bishop was executed in 1538. After 1538, the Catholic Church was only revived in 1931 as a part of the bishopric of Copenhagen . The state church is now the Protestantism Protestant Faroese People s Church . Today there are 130 Catholic believers from 23 nations living on the Faroe Islands. Their center of worship is the Mariukirkjan St. Mary s Church in T rshavn . Although the Catholic presence is small, the Church has had a large impact through the St. Frans school, run by the Franciscan Sisters since its establishment in 1933.
