He succeeded Palnatoke as the chieftain of the Jomsvikings , but he proved more wise than brave. In order to win Astrid, the daughter of the Wendish chieftain Burislav , he promised to liberate the Wends of the tribute they had to pay to the Danes. He fulfilled his promise by sailing to Zealand Denmark Zealand where he sent the message to Sweyn Forkbeard that he had important tidings, but had fallen ill and could not come in person to bring them to him. As Sweyn was curious, he went aboard Sigvaldi s ship and was captured by the Jomsvikings. To be liberated the Danish king had to grant independence to both the Jomsvikings and to the Wends, in addition to paying a king s ransom. Svein also had to marry Gunhild of Wenden , daughter of Burislav and Burislav married Sweyn s sister Tyri. At the funeral of his father, Strut Harald, Sigvaldi was advised by Sweyn to attack Norway and to depose Haakon Jarl . This promise led to the Battle of Hj rungav gr in 986, from which Sigvald fled with disgrace. In 1000, Sigvaldi proved to be treacherous at the Battle of Svolder , by luring Olaf Tryggvason to the battle and by deserting him in the heat of battle. There is no record of him after the Battle of Svolder. However, his brother Thorkell the Tall Thorkell s invasion of England in 1009 was allegedly intended to avenge Sigvaldi s death See Palgrave p.248 . 1. Jon Haraldsson

Unreferenced date February 2008 Jon Haraldsson was Earl of Orkney between 1206 and 1231 . Jon Haraldsson and his brother David were the sons of Harald Maddadsson with his second wife Hvarflod, daughter of Earl M el Coluim of Moray . Jon and David were joint Earls of Orkney after the death of their father. David Haraldsson died of sickness in 1214, leaving Jon Haraldsson to rule alone. In 1222, Jon Haraldsson was implicated, indirectly, in the burning of Bishop Adam of Caithness in his hall at Halkirk by local farmers. Jon was accused of looking on or of fomenting the discontent. King Alexander II of Scotland undertook harsh reprisals for the killing, to the satisfaction of Pope Honorius III . Snaekoll Gunnisson, a great grandson of Rognvald Kali , demanded that Jon Haraldsson should share the Earldom with him. The supporters of Jon and Snaekoll fought a war until it was agreed that King Haakon IV of Norway should settle the matter. All concerned set off to Norway , but a ship carrying Jon Haraldsson, his supporters and his kin, was lost at sea on the return voyage during 1231. With his death the Norsemen Norse line of the Earldom of Orkney , dating from the time of Harald Fairhair , became extinct. The Mormaer of Caithness was given over to Magnus II, Earl of Orkney Magnus , Magnus mac Gille Brighde of Angus , the son of Gille Brigte , Mormaer of Angus , forming the basis for a new governing presence. In 1236, Magnus was granted the Earldom of Orkney by King Haakon IV. Sources Anderson, Alan Orr Early Sources of Scottish History AD 500 1286 2 Vols, Edinburgh, 1922 Hudson, Benjamin T. 1. Godfrid Haraldsson

for the Godfrid who was with the Great Heathen Army Godfrid, Duke of Frisia Godfrid Haraldsson c. 820 c. 856 was the son of the Danish king Harald Klak . In 826 he was baptized together with his parents in Mainz in the Frankish Empire , with crown prince Lothair I Lothair standing as a godparent . After his baptism, Godfrid stayed in Lothair s retinue, until they fell out sometime in the 840s, and Godfrid returned to Denmark. There he teamed up with Rorik , the son of his father s brother his cousin . In 850 they united against Lothair and raided Dorestad . Rorik took possession of Frisia . Godfrid continued to plunder Flanders and Artois , and returned to Denmark for the winter. In 851 he was back, raiding in Frisia and around the Rhine, then sailed up the Scheldt to attack Ghent and the abbey of Drongen . After another winter in Denmark, Godfred returned again in 853 to Francia. On 9 October 853 he sailed up the Seine . The fleet advanced beyond Rouen , as far as Pont de l Arche , and encamped on an island near Les Andelys . Charles the Bald summoned his army as well as that of the Middle Francia Middle Kingdom of Lothar, Godfred s godfather. The two sides faced each other the whole winter, the Frankish land army lacking boats to attack the Vikings. The stalemate was resolved in the spring of 853 when Godfred sailed away, probably with a tribute. In 855 Godfred and his cousin Rorik of Dorestad Rorik tried to gain power in Denmark after the death of king Horik I . The attempt failed, and they returned the same year, taking back Dorestad and a large part of the area of what is now The Netherlands . After this, the sources are silent about this Godfred. 1. Strut bar

Unreferenced date June 2009 Image Strut bar ng sentra.JPG thumb mounted strut bar Image Strut bar2.JPG thumb front strut bar Image Sonett mk2 engine.jpg thumb Combined strut bar and overflow container in an mk2 Saab Sonett . A strut bar , strut brace , or strut tower brace STB is a mostly aftermarket car Suspension vehicle suspension accessory usually used in conjunction with MacPherson strut s on Monocoque monocoque or unibody chassis to provide extra stiffness between the strut towers. With a MacPherson strut suspension system where the Spring device spring and shock absorber are combined in the one suspension unit, the entire vertical suspension load is transmitted to the top of the vehicle s strut tower, unlike a double wishbone suspension where the spring and shock absorber may share the load separately. In general terms, a strut tower in a monocoque chassis is a reinforced portion of the inner wheel well and is not necessarily directly connected to the main chassis rails. For this reason there is inherent flex within the strut towers relative to the chassis rails. A strut bar is designed to reduce this strut tower flex by tying two parallel strut towers together. This transmits the load of each strut tower during cornering which ties the two towers together and reduces chassis flex. To accomplish this effectively especially on MacPherson strut suspensions , the bar must be rigid throughout its length, and also attached to the firewall. Citation needed date April 2011 On versions of the Saab Sonett , the overflow container for the cooling system doubles as a strut bar. Many manufacturers have fitted strut braces to performance models as standard or optional equipment ..., whereas other W body coupes and sedans did not. Infobox Aviation name Interplane strut image Image Jungmannstrut.JPG caption Metal interplane struts of a B cker B 131 B cker Jungmann An interplane strut is an aircraft airframe component designed to transmit Lift force lift and landing loads between wing mainplane panels on biplane s and other aircraft with multi wing designs. They also maintain the correct angle of incidence for the connected wing panels and are often braced with Flying wires wires . Very early aircraft used interplane struts made from bamboo , ref Taylor, 1990. p. 71. ref while later designs employed Streamlines, streaklines, and pathlines Applications streamlined struts made either from spruce or Fraxinus ash woods chosen for their strength and light weight. More modern or higher performance Aerobatics aerobatic biplanes often feature metal interplane struts. Configuration The most common configuration is for two struts to be placed in parallel, one behind the other. These struts will usually be braced by incidence wires running diagonally between them, and more than one of these strut pairs may be placed along the span of the wing, creating multiple bays see below . Other common arrangements include N struts, where the diagonal bracing wires are replaced by an extra wooden or metal member running diagonally from the top of one strut to the bottom of the other in a pair V struts, where the struts from the upper wing converge to a single point on the lower wing commonly used when the lower wing has a considerably smaller Chord aircraft chord than the upper wing and the I strut, where the pair of struts is replaced by a single, thicker strut.
