General information Image Sejm l ski Skarbiec.JPG thumb right 200px The vault of the National Treasury of Silesia, nowadays an archive The Silesian Treasury consisted of about 1 ton of gold in 1939. It was managed by the Silesian Parliament . The voivodship produced about 46 Polish PKB 90 of the local income remained in the autonomous region, while the remaining 10 used to be become part of the state budget. Vault A vault containing the Treasury of Silesia was placed in the basements of the building of the Silesian Parliament . At the outbreak of the second world war, there was about a ton of gold in staffs kept inside. The walls of the vault were thicker than in the rest of the building, they were about 1,5 metre thick, and so were the ceilings. The vault contains a mechanism which, if a stranger attempted to open the manhole, sinks the treasure in a pool below. The vault serves today as a place where archive documents are being formed. History The museum was founded in 1929 by the Silesian Sejm , while the region was recovering from the Silesian Uprisings . In the interbellum , the Silesian Museum was one of the biggest museums in Poland. The Nazi s however brought the collection to Bytom and tore the building down in 1940. In 1984 the museum was reinstated in a former hotel building. Collection Mainly ethnological and archaeological artefacts from the surrounding area, related to the History of Silesia . Furthermore some 233 works of Polish art, with as remarkable examples portraits by Stanis aw Wyspia ski and some paintings by Olga Bozna ska . It was founded on 4 December 1955 to commemorate the great astronomer Nicolaus Copernicus . It is located in the Silesian culture and refreshment park Silesian Central Park , on the boundary between the Katowice and Chorz w districts of the Upper Silesian Metropolitan Union . Facilities The Planetarium s 23 meter dome can seat some four hundred spectators viewing projections of the sky from both analogue and digital planetarium projector s. It hosts regular public shows on astronomical topics as well as a variety of other events. In 2011 it hosted the fifth IOAA International Olympiad on Astronomy and Astrophysics . The Planetarium s sister astronomical observatory is equipped with a 300 mm diameter refracting telescope the largest refractor in use in Poland and a number of smaller instruments. On cloudless days, visitors can view live images of the Sun and, after dusk, a range of celestial objects at a magnification of up to 750 times. The observatory conducts research on comet s and minor planet s. The Planetarium has an astronomical library of some 10,000 volumes and, in the courtyard, an impressive sundial .
