In 193 AD, Messala was from May until June the Suffect Consul of Rome. He was in command of the location where the murder of Pertinax took place. Septimius Severus accused Messala of murdering Pertinax and placing on the throne the Senator Didius Julianus after using his influence to convene and order the Senate to do so. Septimius Severus calls the death of Didius Julianus divine providence and ordered the execution of Messala. Mevania modern Bevagna , an ancient Roman town and municipium of Umbria , in the Augustan Italian Regio VI Regio VI . It lay on the western branch of the Via Flaminia , 13 km 8 mi WSW of Forum Flaminii where the branches rejoin. In 310 BC the consul Fabius broke the Umbrian forces here but otherwise it is not mentioned until the 1st century AD. In 69 the army of Vitellius awaited here the advance of Vespasian . Pastures near the Tinia river and the white oxen of the Clitumnus modern. Clitunno River are mentioned by Propertius , whose family was from the area from Assisi um, Spello Hispellum , or Mevania itself they may refer to Mevania. Mevania is specifically mentioned by the later writers Silius Italicus , Lucan poet Lucan and Statius . There are important remains of a temple near the north gate, of a theatre built into modern houses in the misnamed via dell Anfiteatro, lesser remains of a second temple in the church of S. Vincenzo near the east gate, mosaics belonging to midsized baths in the via Porta Guelfa, and very scanty remains of an amphitheatre at some distance from the modern town. Having studied philology under Johann Georg Graevius Graevius and Pieter Burmann the Elder Burmann the elder , and law under Cornelius Van Eck , in 1716 he succeeded Burmann in his professorship conjointly with Carl Andreas Duker CA Duker , which he continued to hold till his death. Although he obtained the degree of doctor of laws, and was intended for the legal profession, he decided to concentrate on philological studies. sfn Chisholm 1911 p 474 His edition of Livy 1738 1746, and subsequent editions is the work on which his fame chiefly rests. The preface gives a particular account of all the literary men, who have at different periods commented on the works of Livy. It is known primarily from the great Battle of Naulochus sea fight in which Sextus Pompeius was defeated by Marcus Vipsanius Agrippa , 36 BC 36 BCE , and which was fought between Mylae and Naulochus. Suetonius Suet. Aug. 16 Appian, B.C. v. 116 22. Pompeius himself during the battle had been encamped with his land forces at Naulochus Appian l. c. 121 , and after his victory, Octavian , in his turn, took up his station there, while Agrippa and Lepidus advanced to attack Messana modern Messina . Id. 122. It is clear from its name that Naulochus was a place where there was a good roadstead or anchorage for shipping. Some have doubted its existence as a populated place, but Silius Italicus includes it in his list of Sicilian cities. Sil. Ital. xiv. 264. From the description in Appian it is clear that it was situated between Mylae and Cape Rasoculmo the Phalacrian Promontory of Ptolemy , and probably not very far from the latter point but there is nothing to fix its site more definitely. Helorus or Elorus Greek language Greek lang grc or lang grc , is a river in the southeast of Sicily , the most considerable which occurs between Syracuse, Italy Syracuse and Cape Pachynum . It is now called Tellaro , evidently a corruption of Helorus. It rises in the hills between Palazzolo ancient Acrae and Giarratana , and flows at first to the south, then turns eastward, and enters the sea about 40 km south of Syracuse. Near its mouth stood the Helorus town of the same name . In the upper part of its course it is a mountain stream, flowing over a rugged and rocky bed, whence Silius Italicus calls it undae clamosus Helorus xiv. 269 but near its mouth it becomes almost perfectly stagnant, and liable to frequent inundations. Hence Virgil justly speaks of praepingue solum stagnantis Helori Aen. iii. 698 . Ovid praises the beauty of the valley through which it flows, which he terms Helornia Tempe Fast. iv. 476 . Several ancient authors mention that the stagnant pools at the mouth of the river abounded in fish, which were said to be so tame that they would eat out of the hand, in the same manner as was afterwards not uncommon in the fishponds of the ancient Rome Romans .
