    Eras of the Halakha Zemah ben Hayyim Hebrew or sometimes Zemah b. Hayyim was Gaon Hebrew Gaon of Sura from 889 to 895. He was the stepbrother and successor of Nahshon ben Zadok , and has become known especially through the reply which he made to the inquiry of the Kairwanites regarding Eldad ha Dani . This responsum, which appeared in part in the first edition of the Shalshelet ha abbalah Venice, 1480 , was republished as completely as possible by A. Epstein in Vienna in his Eldad ha Dani. It embraces nine points and concludes with an apology for Eldad s forgetfulness. According to Epstein, only one other responsum by ema has been published it is given in the Constantinople edition of the Pardes , and ends with the same words as does the first mentioned responsum . I.H. Weiss , however, ascribes to this gaon also the authorship of responsa in Sha are ede iv., No. 14 and in the compilation emdah Genuzah Nos. 58 61, 111 131 .   1. Jacob ben Hayyim Zemah

    Unreferenced date August 2007 Jacob ben Hayyim Zemah 17th century was a History of the Jews in Portugal Portuguese kabalist and physician. He received a medical training in his native country as a Marano , but fled about 1619 to Safed and devoted himself to the Talmud and the casuists pose im until 1625 then he went to Damascus , where for eighteen years he studied kabbalah from the Zohar and the writings of Isaac Luria and Hayyim Vital . He finally settled at Jerusalem and opened a yeshivah for the study of the Zohar and other kabbalistic works, David Conforte being for some time one of his pupils ore ha Dorot, pp. 36a, 49a . Jacob ema was one of the greatest kabbalists of his period and was a prolific author, his works including treatises of his own as well as compilations of the writings of ayyim Vital. He produced twenty works, of which only two have been published. The first of these is the ol ba Ramah Korez, 1785 , a commentary on the Idra, which he began in 1643, and for which he utilized the commentary of ayyim Vital. In the preface to this work he maintained that the coming of the Messiah depended on repentance teshuvah and on the study of kabbbalah from the Zohar and the writings of Isaac Luria, the delay in the advent of the Messiah being because schools for such study had not been established in every town. His second published work is the Nagid u Me awweh Amsterdam, 1712 , on the mystical meaning of the prayers, this being an abridgment of a compendium which ema composed on the basis of a more comprehensive treatise. Among his unpublished works, special mention may be made of the Ronnu le Ya a ob, in which he calls himself the proselyte ger ede Cat. Oppenheimer, No. 1062 Q .     Solomon ben Simon Duran c. 1400 &ndash 1467 Hebrew , known as Rashbash , was a medieval rabbi with antagonistic views towards the Kabbalah , and the son and successor of Simon ben Zemah Duran . Solomon was born in Algiers , and in his youth became familiar with the Talmud and rabbinical literature, and with a resoluteness remarkable for his time he protested against the Kabbalah Kabbala . Like his father, he was the author of many responsa published in Leghorn, 1742 his letter, written in the language of the Talmud, to Nathan Nagara in Constantine, Algeria Constantine has been separately reprinted, with an index of passages Kerem emed, ix.110 et seq. . His defense of the Talmud, written in 1437 against the attacks of the convert Geronimo de Santa F , appeared under the title Mil emet obah, and also the title Setirat Emunat ha No rim, after the second part of his father s eshet u Magen. It was also published separately at Leipzig in 1856. His treatise Tikkun Soferim, which has frequently been ascribed to his father, is printed as an appendix to the work Yabin Shemu ah, Leghorn, 1744. He is cited in the Mishnah merely few times, but on the Tosefta and Baraita s portions that are quoted in the Talmud his name is mentioned many times. In many of the classical texts of the Baraita , in matters in dispute, he has stated a different version to these diputes cited in the Mishnah . He is most likely the son of R. Aaron was one of the greatest masters of the Cabala, and that his work contained the most profound secrets which he Hurwitz wished to disclose.
