  1. William of Apulia

for the rulers of Apulia named William William Iron Arm William II, Duke of Apulia William of Apulia was a chronicler of the Normans , writing in the 1090s. His Latin language Latin epic poem epic , Gesta Roberti Wiscardi The Deeds of Robert Guiscard , written in hexameter s, is one of the principal contemporary sources for the Norman conquest of southern Italy , especially the career of Robert Guiscard , Duke of Apulia 1059&ndash 1085 . It was composed between 1096 and 1099. It can be dated by the reference in the prologue to Pope Urban II this gives a terminus ante quem , for the pope died in July 1099. A reference in Book III to the Gallic race who wanted to open the roads to the Holy Sepulchre shows that William must have been writing after the Council of Clermont , called by Urban in November 1095. A reference to Pope Urban II as still living places it before his death in July 1099. The poem was dedicated to Duke Roger Borsa son of duke Robert Guiscard . Editions William of Apulia, trans. 1. County of Apulia

The County of Apulia was a Norman people Norman country founded by William Iron Arm William of Hauteville that existed for sixteen years, from 1043 to 1059 in the territories of Gargano , Capitanata , Apulia , Campania and Vulture area Vulture . Creation William I of Hauteville, who returned in September 1042 in Melfi , was recognized by all the Normans as supreme leader. He turned to Guaimar IV of Salerno Guaimar IV , Lombard prince of Salerno and Rainulf Drengot , Count of Aversa , and offered both an alliance. With the unification of the two Norman families, Altavilla and Drengot, Guaimar offered official recognition of the conquests and at the end of the year, an assembly of Lombards and Norman barons at Melfi met with Rainulf and William, which ended at the beginning of the following year 1043 . In this meeting Guaimar V of Salerno ensured the Hauteville dominance over Melfi. William of Hauteville formed the second core of his possessions and differentiated himself from Rainulf I of Aversa, head of the territories of Campania. All the barons present offered a tribute as a vassal to Guaimar, which recognized William I of Hauteville as the first of the title of Count of Apulia . To tie it to himself, he offered to marry her niece Guide, daughter of the duke Guy of Sorrento . Guaimar reconfirmed the title of count to Rainulf as well which created County of Puglia. William stated that the first capital of the county, and home of the Crown would be Melfi, a city that would remain outside the partition. It would remain capital for forty years before being moved to Salerno the center of the city was divided into twelve districts, each of them with a palace and a count with control over that area of town. 1. Roger IV, Duke of Apulia

Roger IV 1152&ndash 1161 was the eldest son of William I of Sicily and Margaret of Navarre . Twice in his short life he was the object of the barons intent to replace his father as king. When he was made the duke of Apulia is unknown, probably after his father s assumption of power in 1154. In 1156, when he was three years old, barons opposed to Maio of Bari began to consider removing not only the emir , but also the king, and putting Roger on the throne. While a minor, the barons would be free from meaningful royal control. In 1161, after the successful assassination of Maio, the rebels paraded the nine year old Roger through the streets, announcing his succession and heralding his coming coronation in the Cathedral of Palermo . However, the populace instead supported the succession claims of Simon, Prince of Taranto Simon, erstwhile Prince of Taranto , the king s illegitimate half brother. The people rebelled nd the palace was stormed. In the ensuing battle, young Roger was killed, by a wayward arrow to the eye. An alternative theory, advanced by William s enemy Hugo Falcandus Falcandus , is that Roger died after repeated kicking by his father, who was in a rage at having been betrayed by his son. Roger was interred in the cathedral with his brother Henry, Prince of Capua , but later was moved to the chapel of Saint Mary Magdalene in Monreale . 1. William II, Duke of Apulia

William II 1095 July 1127 was the List of Counts of Apulia and Calabria duke of Apulia and Calabria from 1111 to 1127. He was the son and successor of Roger Borsa . His mother, Adela of Flanders , had previously been queen of Denmark, and he was a half brother of Charles I, Count of Flanders Charles the Good . He succeeded his father as duke in 1111, though Adela served as regent until William was of age. Like father, like son he proved utterly inept at governing his Italian possessions. He could not avoid conflict with his cousin Roger II of Sicily , and in 1121 Pope Calixtus II personally intervened to make peace between the warring cousins. William and Roger came to an agreement, whereby Roger provided knights to help William quash a revolt of the minor baron Jordan of Ariano , and in exchange, William abandoned his Sicilian and Calabrian lands. In 1114, William married a daughter of Count Robert of Carazzo, but they had no children. He died without legitimate posterity in July 1127, leaving the entire of the Norman Mezzogiorno to his first cousin once removed, Roger of Sicily, his erstwhile ally. Generally considered an insignificant ruler by modern historians, William was respected by his contemporaries, popular with his barons and subjects, and praised for his martial prowess.
