  1. Symbolic simulation

Unreferenced date June 2008 In computer science, a simulation is a computation of the execution of some appropriately modelled state transition system. Typically this process models the complete state of the system at individual points in a discrete linear time frame, computing each state sequentially from its predecessor. Models for computer programs or VLSI logic designs can be very easily simulated, as they often have an operational semantics which can be used directly for simulation. Symbolic simulation is a form of simulation where many possible executions of a system are considered simultaneously. This is typically achieved by augmenting the domain over which the simulation takes place. A symbolic Variable programming variable can be used in the simulation state representation in order to index multiple executions of the system. For each possible valuation of these variables, there is a concrete system state that is being indirectly simulated. Because symbolic simulation can cover many system executions in a single simulation, it can greatly reduce the size of verification problems. Techniques such as symbolic trajectory evaluation STE and generalized symbolic trajectory evaluation GSTE are based on this idea of symbolic simulation. 1. Historical simulation

Cleanup date April 2009 Historical simulation in finance s value at risk VaR analysis is a procedure for predicting value at risk by simulating or constructing the cumulative distribution function CDF of assets returns over time. Unlike most parametric VaR models, Historical Simulation does not assume any distribution on the asset returns. Also, it is relatively easy to implement. However, there is a couple of shortcomings of historical simulation, and first of all is that it imposes a restriction on the estimation assuming asset returns are independent and identically distributed random variable independent and identically distributed iid which is not the case. From empirical evidence, it is known that asset returns are clearly not independent as they exhibit certain patterns such as volatility clustering . Therefore it can be unrealistic to assume iid asset returns. Second restriction relates to time. Historical simulation, it applies equal weight to all returns of the whole period and this is inconsistent with the nature where there is diminishing predictability of data that are further away from the present. These two shortcomings leads economists and financial experts to further develop other non parametric, semi parametric and parametric models. Weighted historical simulation Like the traditional historical simulation technique, weighted historical simulation applies decreasing weights to returns that are further away from the present, which overcomes the inconsistency of historical simulation with diminishing predictability of data that are further away from the present. However, weighted historical simulation still assumes iid asset returns. ref cite journal last Boudoukh first J. coauthors Richardson, M., Whitelaw, R. title The Best of Both Worlds journal Risk year 1998 volume 11 pages 64 67 url http pages.stern.nyu.edu rwhitela papers hybrid 20risk98.pdf ref Filtered historical simulation Filtered historical simulation is a semi parametric technique in forecasting ...   more details

  1. Dynamic simulation

Dynamic simulation is the use of a computer program to model the time varying behavior of a system. The systems are typically described by ordinary differential equations or partial differential equations . As mathematical model s incorporate real world constraints, like gear backlash engineering and rebound from a hard stop, equations become nonlinear. This requires numerical methods to solve the equations. A numerical simulation is done by stepping through a time interval and calculating the integral of the derivatives by approximating the area under the derivative curves. Some methods use a fixed step through the interval, and others use an adaptive step that can shrink or grow automatically to maintain an acceptable error tolerance. Industrial uses of dynamic simulation are many and range from nuclear power, steam turbines, 6 degree of freedom vehicle modeling, electric motors, econometric models, biological systems, robot arms, mass spring dampers, hydraulic systems, and drug dose migration through the human body to name a few. These models can often be run in real time to give a virtual response close to the actual system.
