italic title Dialogues of Plato The Sisyphus is purported to be one of the Socratic dialogue dialogues of Plato . The dialogue is extant and was included in the Henri Estienne Stephanus edition published in Geneva in 1578. It is now generally acknowledged to be spurious. The work probably dates from the fourth century BC, and the author was presumably a pupil of Plato . ref name DSH D.S. Hutchinson, introduction to Sisyphus, in John M. Cooper and D. S. Sisyphus believes that deliberation allows one to find the best course of action, but Socrates is puzzled by what deliberation is, and why it is supposed to be different from guesswork. The Sisyphus fragment is a 42 line excerpt in iambic trimeter from an ancient Greek satyr play written either by Euripides or Critias . In Diels Kranz , it is 88 B 25, attributed to Critias. The words are spoken by Sisyphus , a character in the play. The play itself is no longer extant. But Sextus Empiricus preserved the excerpt in full for us by quoting it in his Against the Mathematicians 9.54 other ancient writers, apparently independently of Sextus, refer to and or quote parts of the excerpt. It is the oldest known account of a Naturalism philosophy naturalistic evolution of religion . It expresses an atheistic viewpoint by founding religion not in a valid belief in divinity, but in a man made device for getting people to obey the law out of fear of divine punishment for transgressions. Authorship Sextus attributes the lines to Critias, as do other ancient authors. Recently, modern scholars e.g., Dihle 1977, Kahn 1997 have increasingly begun to question this identification, attributing the lines instead to Euripides , who is known to have written a play now lost titled Sisyphus , and who more importantly is identified by other ancient writers as the author of the fragment. Sisyphus cooling named after Sisyphus , a figure in the Greek mythology is a mechanism through which atoms can be cooled using laser beams below the temperatures expected to be achieved by Doppler cooling . It comes about as a result of a polarization gradient created by two counter propagating laser beams with orthogonality orthogonal polarization waves polarization . Atoms moving through the potential landscape created by the standing wave created by the interference of the two counter propagating beams lose kinetic energy as they move to a potential maximum, at which point optical pumping moves them to a lower energy state, thus losing the potential energy they had. Repeated cycles of converting kinetic energy to potential energy, then losing potential energy via optical pumping allow the atoms to reach temperatures orders of magnitude below those available through simple Doppler cooling . In Canadian constitutional law , the dialogue principle is an approach to the interpretation of the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms where judicial review of legislation is said to be part of a dialogue between the legislatures and the courts. It specifically involves governments drafting legislation in response to court rulings and courts acknowledging the effort if the new legislation is challenged. This approach was introduced by constitutional scholar Peter Hogg and has had acceptance in much of the academic world and in courts. Nevertheless, it remains a controversial principle as it attempts to justify what many critics see as judicial activism in the courts. Further reading Peter Hogg and Allison Bushell.
