It was fought on December 21, 1866 near Fort Phil Kearney in the Wyoming Territory between about 2,300 warriors of the Lakota people Lakota and Northern Cheyenne led by Crazy Horse and Red Cloud and a troop of the United States cavalry led by Captain William Fetterman , who was killed during the fighting. This battle was a major victory for Native Americans in the 1860s. Background During the autumn of 1866, allied bands of Lakota, Cheyenne, and Arapaho in the Powder River area were under the leadership of Red Cloud. Warriors from these bands regularly attacked the troops at both Forts Phil Kearny and C.F. Smith, effectively closing travel by emigrant miners and settlers on the Bozeman Trail. The troops under assault often included parties gathering wood for fuel for the forts. Battle On the morning of December 21, 1866, a wood train from Ft. Kearney was attacked again. William Carrington, ordered a relief party, composed of 49 infantrymen of the 18th Infantry, 27 mounted troopers of the 2nd Cavalry and with Captain James Powell commanding. Their names are given as Isaiah, Sabbas, Moses, Jeremiah, Paul, Adam, Sergius, Domnus, Proclus, Hypatius, Isaac, Macarius, Mark, Benjamin, Eusebius, and Elias. A group of these martyrs were killed at Sinai Peninsula Sinai during the reign of Diocletian , about the year 296. The martyrs of El Tor Raithu were killed about the middle of the fifth century.
