It is located along the Vecht Utrecht at the southern end of the Vechtstreek . History The castle was originally built in the 13th century by lord van Suilen en Anholt as a simple donjon . In 1422 during the Hook and Cod wars the castle was completely demolised. In 1510 rebuilding started. In 1752 the castle was modified for the last time. It holds a tapestry by the Delft carpet weaver Maximiliaan van der Gught. The castle was founded in 1313 by the Danish king Eric VI of Denmark Erik Menved in order to establish a stronghold in northern Jutland to counter the ongoing rebellions by the local nobility and peasants against the crown. The castle was successful and from the 15th century and onwards the castle had a more peaceful role as the local administrative center. King Christian II held the future Swedish king Gustav Vasa captive at Kal during 1518 1519, until he escaped. When king Frederick III of Denmark Frederick III converted the elective monarchy into an absolute monarchy by the revolution of 1660 in Denmark , the castle lost its function. In 1661, Frederick III gave Kal Slot to Ulrik Frederik Gyldenl ve, Count of Laurvig Ulrik Frederik Gyldenl ve , who in the following year 1662 , tore down the now abandoned castle.
