New York State Judiciary The New York State Court of Claims is the court which handles all claims against the State of New York and certain state agencies. It is not a smallclaimscourt. Judges of the Court of Claims are appointed by the Governor of New York and confirmed by the New York State Senate State Senate for a 9 year term. While there are Judges of the Court of Claims who handle only claims against the state, there are many Judges of the Court of Claims who are appointed to this post and then assigned to serve as an Acting Justice of the New York State Supreme Court , generally in the criminal term of the court. This is done to increase the number of trial judges in the state for felony crimes, as it can be easier for Legislators to vote to increase the number of Court of Claims judges than Supreme Court Justices in view of differences in the manner of selecting the judges. Use dmy dates date April 2011 The European smallclaims procedure is a smallclaims procedure that took effect on 1 January 2009 across the European Union for dealing with cross border claims under the Brussels regime up to a value of 2,000 Euro. Smallclaims procedures provide a middle ground between formal litigation and ADR, where disputes involving small value claims can be resolved in courts faster, cheaply, and less formally. The main limitation of smallclaims procedures is that they are restricted to particular jurisdictions. In order to overcome this limitation the European Commission has produced a regulation for a European SmallClaims Procedure ESCP . ref Regulation 861 2007 EC of the European Parliament and of the Council of 11 July 2007 establishing a European SmallClaims Procedure O. Wikify date January 2012 Initial Jobless Claims is a report issued by the U.S. Department of Labor on a weekly basis. The employment situation is extremely important for a macroeconomic analysis, so the financial markets track employment indicators, although this is a low impact indicator compared with the monthly BLS s Employment Report . This report tracks how many new people have filed for unemployment benefits in the previous week. It is a good gauge of the U.S. job market. For instance, when more people file for unemployment benefits, fewer people have jobs, and vice versa. Investors can use this report to gather pertinent information about the economy, but it s a very volatile data, so the four week average of jobless claims is monitored. The report is released at 13 30 GMT on Thursdays 08 30 EST and can be a market moving event. Initial jobless claims measure emerging unemployment, and it is released after one week, but continued claims data measure the number of persons claiming unemployment benefits, and it is released one week later than the initial claims, that s the reason why initial have a higher impact in the financial markets.
