Nofootnotes date December 2007 SMART breeding SMART S election with M arkers and A dvanced R eproductive T echnologies or Precision breeding refers to a genetic engineering technique of reproducing a species members together to retain desirable traits and so produce a stronger Hybrid biology hybrid . The technique was successfully used by Nachum Kedar, an Israeli scientist, who applied the technique using beefsteak tomatoes to produce a fruit that would ripen on the vine and remain firm in transit. Fact date December 2007 Smart breeding has been advanced as an alternative to transgenics as a way to produce plants that are resistant to various environmental problems. 1. Breeding season

The breeding season is the most suitable season, usually with favourable conditions and abundant food and water, for breeding in the wild breeding among some wild animals and birds wildlife . Species with a breeding season have naturally evolved to have sexual intercourse during a certain time of year in order to achieve the best reproductive success. Different species of wild animal and birds have different breeding seasons according to their particular habitat requirements and food availability. Abiotic factors such as the timing of seasonal rains and winds can also play an important role in breeding onset and success. C.Michael Hogan. 2010 Communal breeding Many species breed in colonies or large communities which is known as communal breeding. It is common to see large congregations of these species in particular favourable locations in their breeding seasons. These breeding colonies and their location are generally protected by wildlife conservation laws to keep the species from going extinct . Some species have evolved for communal breeding in large breeding colonies and can not breed in smaller numbers or pairs alone. These species can be threatened by imminent extinction if they are hunted on their breeding grounds or if their breeding colonies are destroyed. The Passenger pigeon is a famous example of probably the most numerous land bird on the American continent which had evolved for communal breeding that went extinct due to large scale hunting in its communal breeding grounds during the breeding season and its inability to breed in smaller numbers. Unreferenced stub auto yes date December 2009 Intraspecific breeding is the act of breeding two variety biology varieties within the same species . The breeding of intraspecific organisms produce Hybrid biology hybrids that often show hybrid vigour heterosis , growing more vigorously and yielding more than in bred lines. Intraspecific offspring are usually fertile , but will not breed true , although they share the same gene pool . Intraspecific interactions do not generally lead to the extinction of a species although their offspring will be highly variable, some resembling one parent, some the other, and others showing a whole range of characteristics and combinations between the two. Intraspecific offspring, should not be confused with Interspecific hybrids Interspecific hybrids interspecific hybrids such as the mule which are generally not Fertility fertile . 1. Tree breeding

Tree breeding is the application of genetic principles to the genetic improvement and management of forest trees. In contrast to the selective breeding of livestock, arable crops, and horticultural flowers over the last few centuries, the breeding of trees, with the exception of fruit trees, is a relatively recent occurrence. A typical forest tree breeding program starts with selection of superior phenotypes plus trees in a natural or planted forest. This application of Selection methods in plant breeding based on mode of reproduction Mass selection mass selection improves the mean performance of the forest. Offspring is obtained from selected trees and grown in test plantations that act as genetic trials. Based on such tests the best genotypes among the parents can be selected. 1. Breeding in the wild

Breeding in the wild is the natural process of animal reproduction occurring in the natural habitat of a given species. This terminology is distinct from animal husbandry or breeding of species in captivity. Breeding locations are often chosen for very specific requirements of shelter and proximity to food moreover, the breeding season is a particular time window that has evolved for each species to suit species anatomical, climatic and other ecological temporal events. ref M.F. Braby, 2004 ref Many species migrate considerable distances to reach the requisite breeding locations. ref M.L. Heinselman, 1996 ref Certain common characteristics apply to various taxa within the animal kingdom, which traits are often sorted among amphibians, reptiles, mammals, avafauna, arthropods and lower life forms. Amphibians For many amphibian s an annual breeding cycle applies, typically regulated by ambient temperature, precipitation, availability of surface water and food supply. This breeding season is accentuated in temperate regions, ref W.J. Sutherland, 1996 ref where prolonged aestivation or hibernation renders many amphibian species inactive for prolonged periods. Breeding habitat s are typically ponds and streams. Mammals Annual breeding cycles sometimes apply to mammals, with regulating environmental effects including seasonal temperature variation and food availability. Migration patterns of a mammal may sometimes govern breeding times. Mammal breeding in the wild sometimes the use of maternity den s for birthing and protection of the young. The Polar Bear is an example of a mammal who uses a maternity den, whose locations are influenced by migration movements of this species to the seasonal Arctic pack ice s. In particular the Polar Bears who breed in Wapusk National Park need to migrate to the Hudson Bay pack ice . ref C.M.
