The Smithson Baronetcy , of Stanwick in the County of York, is a title in the Baronetage of England . It was created on 2 August 1660 for Hugh Smithson. Sir Hugh Smithson, the fourth Baronet, married Elizabeth Percy, Duchess of Northumberland Lady Elizabeth Seymour , daughter of Algernon Seymour, 7th Duke of Somerset and heiress of the Percy family headed by the Earl of Northumberland. In 1749 the Duke was created Earl of Northumberland, with remainder to his son in law Sir Hugh Smithson, who succeeded as second Earl on his father in law s death in 1750. Michael Golightly on a charge of attempted murder against his wife Enid. Enid was subjected to an attack with a hammer to the side of her head whilst asleep, and was left for some hours by Golightly with a severe brain injury. There was no evidence of forced entry and Golightly did not call an ambulance until late in the afternoon. Before the trial, Bishop Smithson had succeeded in getting bail for the accused, who stayed with monks at Lindisfarne . During the trial he stated that the accused was an upstanding clergyman and it was not in his nature to carry out such an act his submission was opposed by Enid Golightly s family. He joined the Liberal Democrats on their foundation, and stood for Parliament in North Bedfordshire UK Parliament constituency North Bedfordshire at the 1992 General Election.
