It is located on a 0.85 acre rectangular shaped property, owned by Jackson County , approximately 60 meters east of Caney Fork Creek, a major branch of the northwestward trending Tuckasegee River , in the mountains of western North Carolina. The petroglyph boulder occurs within an artificially created bowl shaped depression, which is currently covered with mowed grass previously a corn field and bordered on the west by a thicket of river cane Arundinaria gigantea . Slightly upslope and east of the boulder are a few smaller outcroppings of soapstone bedrock, at least two of which show definite scars left by quarrying for soapstone bowl manufacture. In the 19th century, writing slates were made of slate , which is more durable than paper and was cheap at the time when paper was expensive. It was used to allow children to practice writing . Thin slabs of slate, typically three inches by five roughly 9  ×   12  cm , were also bound into slate books for adult use in workplaces. Slates can be written on using a slate pencil . This is a rod made of soft slate, soapstone , or pressed clay , which makes a thin white line on the slate. Chalk can also be used. The writing can be wiped off with a soft cloth.     unreferenced date July 2009 Oak Lawn is a historical village in south west Cranston, Rhode Island . Prior to being named Oak Lawn in 1872 the area was known as Searle s Corner . The Edward Searle House , built in 1677, and one of the oldest standing structures in Rhode Island , is located in Oak Lawn. The village is also well known for its annual May Breakfast. This New England tradition began in Oak Lawn in 1865 as a way for the members of the Oak Lawn Baptist Church to raise money for local American Civil War veterans. The 1855 Herman Melville novel Israel Potter is based on the life and adventures of an American Revolutionary soldier who was raised on a farm near present day Oak Lawn. Oak Lawn was also the site of an important archeological excavation in the 1950s when archeologists discovered bowls and other Native Americans in the United States Native American artifacts dating over 10,000 years old which had been carved from soapstone. In the pre colonial era the area was populated with bands of the Narragansett Indians known as the Meshanticut and Natick Indians.   1. Peterborough Transcript

    The Peterborough Transcript was a weekly newspaper published in Peterborough, New Hampshire Peterborough , New Hampshire for 157 years. It was founded in 1849 , and remained the only local weekly newspaper for more than a century. It was owned by the Cummings family from 1900 until September 2006, when it was bought by the competing Monadnock Ledger , and became part of the Monadnock Ledger Transcript . In a story announcing the merger, then publisher Joe Cummings described the paper s history John Miller and Kendall Scott founded the Transcript in 1849. Originally named the Contoocook Transcript, this newspaper was the fourth newspaper in Peterborough, the previous three having failed. In its first issue, the publishers stated, In commencing this enterprise, we frankly tell you that we have our doubts and fears in regard to its ultimate success. In 1900, George Cummings sold his soapstone quarry in Francestown, New Hampshire Francestown to purchase the Transcript. It has been in the Cummings family ever since. Four generations have served as its publishers. After George, Paul Cummings Sr. served in that post, followed by his son Paul Jr., who took over the reins in 1946.
