seealso Social equality Horizontal inequality is the inequality economical, social or other that does not follow from a difference in an inherent quality such as intelligence, attractiveness or skills for people or profitability for corporations. In sociology, this is particularly applicable to forced inequality between different subcultures living in the same society. In economics, horizontal inequality is seen when people of similar origin, intelligence, etc. still do not have equal success and have different status, income and wealth. Traditional economic theory predicts that horizontal inequality should not exist in a free market. However, horizontal inequality is observed in real and simulated free market systems. The Pareto optimal economy is one traditional approach to the problem. Even in simulated systems, inequality of perfectly identical actors arises, to give the rich and poor . ref Eric Beinhocker. Unreferenced date December 2009 The Physical Quality of Life Index PQLI is an attempt to measure the quality of life or well being of a country. The value is the average of three statistics basic literacy rate, infant mortality, and life expectancy at age one, all equally weighted on a 0 to 100 scale. It was developed for the Overseas Development Council in the mid 1970s by Morris David Morris, as one of a number of measures created due to dissatisfaction with the use of gross national product GNP as an indicator of development. PQLI might be regarded as an improvement but shares the general problems of measuring quality of life in a quantitative way. It has also been criticized because there is considerable overlap between infant mortality and life expectancy. The UN Human Development Index is a more widely used means of measuring well being. It is one of the numbers used by the UNDP in the calculation of the Human Development Index , but the numbers themselves are gathered by the International Labour Organization . It is a measure of women over the age of fifteen who are working or able to work as a percent of males. It is one of less accurate statistics gathered and is highly variable with regions and year to year within individual countries. In general female economic activity is lowest in the Middle East and South Asia and highest in developed nations and sub Saharan Africa . In the United States, women s involvement in the economy has shifted from the 1890s to the 1970s. Women used to work in what were called pink collar jobs, such as teachers, librarians, and secretaries, but now have careers involving investment like lawyers, doctors, and corporate workers. Compared to men who have always been at a constant high level of employment rates, women are now increasing their numbers in the economy. It implies that there is no universal or uniform social outlook, rather that there are fundamental conflicts that exist inherent in society . Most known examples are the theory of Karl Marx and Max Weber s three component theory of stratification . Barrington Moore and political development In a non Marxist sense, class analysis is a theory of political development, in which political regimes and systems are said to be shaped by the social class structure of the country. The main advocate for this theory is political scientist Barrington Moore, Jr. . In Moore s theory, Great Britain gradually attained a stable democratic governance, compared to neighboring countries such as France and Germany , is due to the rapid displacement of peasantry during the enclosure movement which fully transformed Britain into an advanced, industrial society with a strong bourgeois class, which Moore sees as indispensable for a lasting liberal democracy . In contrast, France had a large peasantry that is stationary on land yet politically volatile, leading to the alternating between violent revolutions and monarchical reactions. For example, people or organizations registered for value added tax have the extra burden of having to keep detailed records of all input tax and output tax to facilitate the completion of VAT returns. This may necessitate them having to employ someone skilled in this field, which would be regarded a compliance cost. nofootnotes date December 2009 wikify date December 2009 Convergence Clubs correspond to levels of international attainment. Groups of countries are classified based on education levels, income per capita , and other measurable factors. For example, very poor countries tend to converge towards one another and, thus, create a Convergence Club at a low level of per capita wealth. Rich, developed countries like the US and Western European countries are grouped into a higher income per capita Convergence level. Barriers prevent very poor countries from jumping from one level to a higher Convergence Club. Barriers can range from educational limitations, lack of resources, or poor infrastructure, etc. All of these factors make it near impossible for one country in one Convergence Club to jump to another Convergence Club. Convergence Clubs are helpful in examining economic development in a specific country relative to other countries. These groups help to identify similarities and or differences between countries and assist researchers in making generalized hypotheses.
