  1. Stray sod

orphan date July 2009 Wikify date July 2009 In contemporary fantasy literature, a stray sod is a clump of grass enchanted by faeries . If a person steps on one, they will become disorientated and lost, even in familiar surroundings. ref Anna Franklin, Paul Mason, Helen Field 2005 . The Illustrated Encyclopedia of Fairies. Sterling Publishing Company, Inc. p.237. ISBN 1843402408, ISBN 9781843402404 ref Wearing an item of clothing inside out breaks the enchantment, allowing the person to find their way again. In other writing and in speech, the phrase stepped on a stray sod can be used metaphorically to denote sudden, unexpected or inexplicable disorientation. ref D. J. Conway 2000 . In more modern Christianized interpretations of the stray sod, the source of the enchantment may not be faeries. ref E. Owens Blackburne 1879 . Publications. p.181. ref A Stray Sod in The Spiderwick Chronicles also has the traits of disorienting travelers. In the companion guide to the series, it is described that, in order to reverse the effects, one must have bread in his or her pocket, or turn their clothes inside out, however, having bread on hand seems more practical.
