The 15th Century Battle of San Martino in Italy was part of an ongoing conflict between two city states, the Republic of Venice Venetians under Berterelli and the Florentine s under Giovanni Disambiguation needed date June 2011 , in 1482 . That battle was fought in swirling mists and, owing to their superior tactics, went the way of the Venetians. In 1859 , during the Italy Italian Risorgimento , there was another greater battle here, more commonly called the Battle of Solferino or the Battle of Solferino and San Martino it was that portion of the struggle, which was fought out between Ludwig von Benedek Benedek Austrian 8th Corps, on the right flank and the Piedmontese army, that is sometimes called the battle of San Martino Benedek s corps held its own all day and covered the retreat of the defeated Austrian army, at the end of the action . Solferino was the largest battle since that at Leipzig in 1813. As a result of their defeat, the Austria ns lost their grip on the region. The village of San Martino was renamed San Martino della Battaglia and a tower, museum and ossuary have been erected as a monument to the battle and its fallen. The site is a few kilometres to the South of Lago di Garda . Born in Seaham, New South Wales Seaham to butcher Abel Pyers and Margaret McDermott, he followed his father into butchery, becoming a carrier between Maitland, New South Wales Maitland and Glen Innes, New South Wales Glen Innes . In the May 2nd, 1972 issue of the paper Pellegrino Ernetti Father Pellegrino Maria Ernetti 1925 1994 claimed to have seen the actual crucifixion through a device called a Chronovisor which allowed individuals to view events from the past and possibly the future by looking through a tube. Father Ernetti submitted a photograph of this so called peek into the past in this date s issue however it is contested whether or not the claim contains any truth, as an almost identical though mirrored left to right photograph of a wood carving by the sculptor Cullot Valera, turned up, thus casting doubt upon Ernetti s divine claim. Franz Adam s first notable work was a collection of lithograph s on the Revolutions of 1848 in the Italian states , done jointly with noted lithographer Denis Auguste Marie Raffet . He painted his first masterpiece during the Second Italian War of Independence of 1859, a scene from the Battle of Solferino . His best known works, meanwhile, depict the Franco Prussian War of 1870.
