Under the direction of Nan Washburn, the symphony is based in Plymouth, Michigan and performs to to audiences all over southeast Michigan. The symphony started out in a local home when Evelyn and Carl Groshke held rehearsals with other musicians. High school music director Paul Wagner organized the formation of the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra which would give its first performance on April 20, 1947. Starting out as a local community orchestra, the Plymouth Symphony Orchestra grew into the professional orchestra now known as the Michigan Philharmonic.
