  1. Soybean checkoff

Like producers of other commodities , such as beef , dairy and egg food eggs , soybean farmers collectively invest a portion of their end of season profits to fund research and promotion efforts through a commodity checkoff program . The soybean checkoff is supported entirely by soybean farmers with individual contributions of 0.5 percent of the market price per bushel sold each season. The efforts of the checkoff are directed by the United Soybean Board , composed of 68 volunteer farmer leaders nominated by their state level checkoff organizations, called Qualified State Soybean Boards QSSBs . The nominees are appointed by the U.S. Secretary of Agriculture to the Board. The soybean checkoff helps facilitate market growth and creation by funding and directing marketing, research and commercialization programs. By building demand both at home and abroad, the soybean checkoff helps ensure a strong and profitable future for U.S. soybean farmers. The United Soybean Board http www.unitedsoybean.org USB and the American Soybean Association ASA are two different organizations with one focus the success of U.S. soybean farmers. Both groups serve this purpose in different ways. Whereas USB administers soybean checkoff activities focusing on research and market development and expansion, ASA focuses on state and national policy issues, which by law the checkoff can t. 1. Soybean oil

Soybean oil is a vegetable oil extracted from the seeds of the soybean Glycine max . It is one of the most widely consumed cooking oil s. As a drying oil , processed soybean oil is also used as a base for printing ink s soy ink and oil paint s. It is also converted to cooking oils. Production To produce soybean oil, the soybeans are cracked, adjusted for moisture content, heated to between 60 and 88 C 140 190 F , rolled into flakes, and solvent extracted with hexane s. The oil is then refined, blended for different applications, and sometimes Hydrogenation hydrogenated . Soybean oils, both liquid and partially hydrogenated are sold as vegetable oil, or are ingredients in a wide variety of processed foods. Most of the remaining residue soybean meal is used as animal feed. 1. Soybean mosaic virus

Taxobox color violet name Soybean mosaic virus SMV virus group iv familia Potyviridae genus Potyvirus species Soybean mosaic virus synonyms Soybean mosaic virus SMV is a plant pathogenic virus of the family Potyviridae . Symptoms Soybean mosaic causes stunting of plants and crinkled and mottling of leaves. Infected plants range from no symptoms to severely mottled and deformed. The leaf blades are puckered along the veins and curled downward. The mottling appears as light and dark green patches on individual leaves. Symptoms can be difficult to see when temperatures are above 90 F. Do not confuse with growth regulator herbicide damage where the leaves will be elongated and which usually occurs in a pattern such as along a field edge. Soybean mosaic can also reduce seed size and pod number per plant, and soybean mosaic is one of several factors associated with discoloration of seeds, causing a dark discolored tear stain origination at the hilum. The virus can interact with bean pod mottle virus BPMV to create severe symptoms in plants infected with both viruses. Pathogen Involved Soybean mosaic virus SMV . This virus has a wide host range including pea and snap bean. SMV is transmitted by aphids and infected seed. Time of Occurrence All season. Conditions Favoring Disease Plants infected when young tend to show more symptoms than plants that infected when older. Higher activity or populations of aphids favor virus transmission. Disease Management Plant seeds free of SMV. Plant early.
