Unreferenced date June 2010 The Yoshimoto Cube is a polyhedron polyhedral mechanical puzzle toy invented in 1971 by Japanese man nihongo Naoki Yoshimoto Yoshimoto Naoki . The cube is made up of eight interconnected cubes and it is capable of folding and unfolding itself in a cyclic fashion. You can keep folding, or unfolding the cube, indefinitely. Once folded, the cube can be turned into two rhombic stellated dodecahedrons. File 36Cube.JPG right thumb 36 Cube puzzle in box. The 36 Cube is a three dimensional sudoku puzzle created by ThinkFun . The puzzle consists of a gray base that resembles a city skyline, plus 36 colored towers. The towers come in six different colors and six different heights. The goal of the puzzle is to place all the towers onto the base so as to form a level cube with each of the six colors appearing once, and only once, in each row and column. The 36 cube was invented by Dr. Derrick Niederman , a PhD. at MIT . He came up with the idea while writing a book on whole numbers , after unearthing an 18th century mathematical hypothesis. ref See Derrick Niederman . ref This supposition, the 36 officer problem , requires placing six regiments of six differently ranked officers in a 6 x 6 square without having any rank or regiment in the same column. ref See Thirty six officers problem . ref Such an arrangement would form a Graeco Latin square . ref See Graeco Latin square . ref Euler conjectured there was no solution to this problem. Although Euler was correct, his conjecture was not settled until Gaston Tarry came up with an exhaustive proof in 1901. ref See Gaston Terry . ref However, ThinkFun s 36 cube puzzle does have a number of solutions, ref http www.thinkfun.com ref which nevertheless demonstrate the validity of Euler s hypothesis. OriginalResearch date October 2011 Euler s 36 officer problem is a mental challenge, which can be attempted either in one s head or on paper, whereas the 36 cube is a mechanical puzzle that must be played on a manufactured grid. The cube rule or cubelaw is an empirical observation regarding democracy democratic election s under the first past the post system. The rule suggests that the party getting the most votes is over represented and conversely, the party getting the least votes is under represented . It was first formulated in a report on British elections in 1909, then extended to elections in other countries. Both in theory and in practice, the cube rule is only applicable in a two party system . In a multi party democracy operating under the first past the post system ref duverger , the cubelaw invariably fails, often leading to capricious results. Suppose we have two parties which receive A and B percent of the vote. According to the cube rule, the ratio of A seats won to B seats won should be proportional to A sup 3 sup B sup 3 sup . So if A wins 60 and B wins 40 , the ratio of votes A B 60 40 1.5, but the ratio of seats is 60 sup 3 sup 40 sup 3 sup 3.375 1. That works out to a ratio of seats of 77 23. In a close election where the popular vote is A 52 and B 48, the seats break 56 44. In other words, the winner gets many extra seats. If there are three parties the ratio of seats will also be proportional to the cube of their votes. Mathematically the cubelaw works because it is an approximation to the law of large numbers .
