St. MaryMagdalene s flood German Magdalenenhochwasser was the largest recorded flood in central Europe ref Without taking the storm surges on the North Sea coasts into account ref with water levels exceeding those of the 2002 European floods . It occurred in July 1342 on and around the feast day of MaryMagdaleneSt. MaryMagdalene which corresponds to 22 July in today s calendar. Following the passage of a Genoa low the rivers Rhine , Moselle river Moselle , Main river Main , Danube , Weser , Werra , Unstrut , Elbe River Elbe , Vltava and their tributaries inundated large areas. Even the river Eider river Eider north of Hamburg flooded the surrounding land. Many towns such as Cologne , Mainz , Frankfurt am Main , W rzburg , Regensburg , Passau and Vienna were seriously damaged. The affected area extended to Carinthia state Carinthia and northern Italy . It appears that after a prolonged hot and dry period continuous rainfalls occurred which lasted several consecutive days and amounted to more than half of the mean yearly precipitation. Since the dry soil was unable to absorb such amounts of water, the surface runoff washed away large areas of fertile soil and caused huge inundations destroying houses, mills and bridges. In W rzburg, the then famous Steinerne Br cke Stone Bridge was taken away and in Cologne it is said that a rowing boat could pass over the city s fortifications. The overall number of casualties is not known, but it is believed that alone in the Danube area 6000 people were killed. It is assumed that the loss of fertile soil led to a serious drop in agricultural production. In addition, the following summers were wet and cold, so that the population suffered from widespread famine. Whether the spreading of the Black Death between 1348 and 1350 killing at least a third of the population in central Europe was facilitated by the weakened condition of the population is a matter of discussion. St. MaryMagdalene Church in Kawit , Cavite Parokya ni Santa Maria Magdalena is one of the oldest churches in the Philippines . It was initially said to be built of wood as early as 1638 through the help of six Filipino families from the towns of Maragondon and Silang Cavite. The town Kawit which was formerly known as Cavite Viejo during Spanish occupation was frequent by Spanish marines and slowly turned into a Red Light District and to help solve the bad reputation of the place Manila Archbishop Miguel Garcia Serrano 1618 1629 ordered to place St. MaryMagdalene as patroness of the town. Some people and researchers say that it is possible that she may not be the original patron saint of the town since most of the old parishes in Cavite was consecrated to the Virgin Mary. Currently it is a cathedral of the Polish Catholic Church led by Bogdan Skowronski. It was here that the first evangelical service in Wroclaw was celebrated. image View from Szewska street.jpg thumb left 200px View from Szewska street During the Second World War the church was seriously damaged. In 1945 the legendary Sinner s Bell, which was the biggest Silesia n bell, was also damaged. StMaryMagdalene was rebuilt during the period 1947 1953. The most precious relic of the church is a Romanesque portal dating from the 12th century, coming from a Benedictine monastery on the Elbl g river river Elbing . The bridge connecting the two towers is called the Mostek Czarownic Witches Bridge . A legend says that the shadows visible on the bridge are the souls of the girls who used to seduce men without wanting to be married, being scared of housekeeping. Indeed shadows represent women with brooms in their hands. clarify date June 2011 image Rom superteam.jpg thumb 200px Romanesque portal image View from Laciarska street.jpg thumb 200px View of Mostek Czarownic from Laciarska street Bibliography Malgorzata Urlich Kornacka A guide to Wroclaw Beata Maciejewska Spacerownik Wroclawski External links http www.wroclaw.ivc.pl english zabytki kosciolMM index.html St. MaryMagdalene church virtual tour coord 51 06 34 N 17 02 05 E region PL type landmark source kolossus dewiki display title Category Churches in Wroc aw Poland church stub de Magdalenenkirche Breslau fr glise de la Madeleine Wroc aw pl Katedra w.
