RomanMilitary The sudis plural sudes is a Latin word meaning stake . It was the name given to stakes carried by legionary Roman legionaries Roman legionaries for employment as a field fortification , sometimes also called vallus . It is frequently, but incorrectly, called a pilum murale meaning wall spear . The stakes were carried by Roman legionaries, typically two were carried by each soldier. Each stake was made of hardwood, usually oak , about convert 150 180 cm ft abbr on long and about convert 50 100 mm in abbr on wide at the thickest point. Square in section, the shape tapers to a point at both ends. The central part is narrowed in a way that strongly suggests the function of a handle, although this may not be its actual purpose. Examples that have been found are rough hewn. It seems clear that the stakes were used to form a temporary defence. However, the exact manner in which stakes were used is the subject of debate among experts. It is possible that the stakes were incorporated into the ramparts of a Roman marching camp castra . Projecting from the ramparts at an angle, they would present a barrier to an attacker attempting to climb up. Alternatively, they could have been placed vertically at the top of the rampart as a fence. Experiments with reconstructions have been disappointing in that such barriers are not strong, as the symmetry of the stakes makes them easy to pull out of the ground. It has been proposed that the stakes were lashed in pairs at intervals along a log or beam to form a Cheval de frise . ref 1 This could be used, for example, as a moveable barrier to bar a gateway. Alternatively, three stakes might be roped together into a defence resembling the Czech hedgehog a sort of giant caltrop . Defences of this type, employed en masse, can be pushed aside only with difficulty and cannot be collapsed. The advantage of such suggested modes of use is that they are consistent ... Notability date September 2011 A Stake in the Outcome 2002 is a book by Jack Stack and Bo Burlingham an editor at Inc. magazine . The book describes the practice of building a culture of ownership within one s business, aiming for long term success. The book gives an overview of how to foster employees enthusiasm, intelligence, and creativity in their positions. Stack is the president and CEO of SRC Holdings Corporation formerly Springfield ReManufacturing Corporation , an employee owned supplier of renovated engines to auto companies. In 1983 Stack and twelve other managers bought the poorly performing factory from International Harvester that they managed. They bought the company with 100,000 in cash and nearly 9M in debt. In a company with a strong culture of ownership, stock is more than compensation. First and foremost, it s a vehicle for change, write Jack Stack and Bo Burlingham in A Stake in the Outcome. Equity is used to involve people in the process of making a difference. In a successful ownership culture, every employee had to take the fate of the company as personally as an individual owner would Business Week magazine called SRC Holdings a management Mecca for its innovative employee ownership program. Employers must retrain employees to think like owners for equity plans to work, Stack says. Owners do not just follow a job description, write Stack and Burlingham. They don t just put in their time. They have something bigger they are working toward. Conversely, management must change the way it thinks about workers. Most managers, for example, assume that a major part of their job is to manage people. But you can t manage owners, the authors say. The alternative is to have a system that allows people to manage themselves. To foster a culture of ownership, the authors suggest these steps Be transparent with your employees. An archer s stake was an anti cavalry defence used by English longbow longbowmen in the 15th and 16th centuries. Origins At the Battle of Nicopolis in 1396 Turkish archers were stationed behind a barrier of stakes.
