It is open to the public daily without charge. Background The arboretum began with the indigenous live oaks on Leland Stanford s estate, which later became the university campus, augmented by a variety of trees that he collected. In 1885 Stanford contracted with noted landscape designer Frederick Law Olmsted to plan the grounds. An 1888 memorandum by Olmsted, and signed by Stanford, states that the then extant University Forest and the Arboretum were to be combined, and that In this enlarged Arboretum it is desired that there shall be exhibited to advantage all the trees and wood plants of the world that may be expected to grow to mature natural forms under the climatic and other conditions of the locality. As Jane Stanford said in her 1903 address to the Stanford trustees No buildings of any kind whatever should ever be erected within the grounds of the original Arboretum.     Teaching Center at the Science and Engineering Quad TCSEQ is a building at Stanford University in California , USA . The Teaching Center, located west of the main quad, was built by project architect James Ingo Freed and landscape architect Laurie Olin in 1999. The Teaching Center, along with the Packard Building, Sequoia Hall, and Varian Physics Labs, were all built as a part of a project to create a new Science and Engineering Quad. The project was funded primarily by Hewlett and Packard, who donated 77.4 million dollars in 1994. The Teaching Center, also referenced by the acronym TCSEQ, is also known as Hewlett.     Stanford University Mathematics Camp , or SUMaC , is a competitive summer mathematics program for rising high school juniors and seniors around the world. The camp lasts for 4 weeks, usually from mid July to mid August. It is based on the campus of Stanford University . Like the Ross Program at Ohio State and the PROMYS program at Boston University , SUMaC does not put emphasis on competition math preparations but focuses instead on advanced undergraduate math topics. History SUMaC was founded in 1995 by Professors Rafe Mazzeo and Ralph Cohen of the Stanford Mathematics Department and has been directed from the beginning by Prof. Mazzeo, and Dr. Rick Sommer. Dr. Sommer was an Assistant Professor in the Stanford Mathematics Department and is currently a Deputy Director of the Education Program for Gifted Youth EPGY , at Stanford.
